News.com.au comparison JPEG:

Greater storm surge / wind gusts / and rainfall than Hurricane Katrina. Blows Cyclone Tracy out of the park. :/

Holy shit. :( What a scary comparison. Still hoping for at least somewhat of a fizzle so it's not so super-powered...

I've fired up the BOM's radar image to watch now. You can just see the edge of the storm spiraling in on the Cairns one.

Seriously creepy! The Willis Island radar has already been destroyed by the storm, it seems.

Sure do hope everybody gets the hell outta there safe and sound. But holy hell, we sure do live in the greatest country in the world sometimes. 8-)

Jesus Christ, that's terrifying. Ugh, keeping hopeful thoughts for folks there.

(Also, Yasi is a totally badass storm name.)

OMG, that is terrifying. And amazing. Will you feel much of the affect of the storm where you are?

I thought the snowstorm we're getting was something, but it's nothing compared to that.

Geez, they aren't showing that on TV >.>
I'm so glad I live in Victoria.
I hope everyone stays safe up there, and are evacuating early, because this is going to hurt :( PM Gillard may have to throw in a Cyclone Levy too by the looks of that! *scared*

Tracy was a baby.

On the day I was born south-east Asia was hit by Typhoon Tip - the largest storm of it's type ever recorded - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Typhoonsizes.jpg

About half as big again as Yasi.

As a weather junkie I'm in complete awe this week - with the winter storm here and Yasi there.

As a human, I'm terrified. That is one hell of a storm 0_0.
