Here you can see how awesome they look side by side. Taken with a flash camera, which doesn't do justice, but does at least pick up the gold and metallic highlights throughout the adornments and spirals.
This project has made me think about doing the Vilturj gods 'as animals,' in this sort of style or series. Oooo the possibilities!

Bastet - also known as Bast, Bast-Mut, Ubasti, Baset, among many other names.
Bastet is an Egyptian cat (and sometimes lioness) Goddess within the Egyptian pantheon. Depicted here as a black cat, as opposed to a cat or lion-headed woman.

Anubis - also known as Yinepu, Inpu, Anpu, Anupu etc.
Anubis, the psychopomp / underworld god within the Egyptian pantheon is depicted here as a jackal. Before Osiris, Anubis was considered the most important god of the dead.

SOLD
18.5 x 20.5cm (or 7.4 x 8 in)
illo's board, fineliner, aquarelle, pencil, metallic and iridescent paint

Date: 2009-03-29 10:52 am (UTC)I particularly love the richness and deep reds in Anubis. This is one deity I've worked with in the past and the colors and tones really fit the feel I got from him.
I saw your pencil and then inkings earlier too and I felt quite inspired to try my hand at some drawing once I realized it could be done in stages like that to get such wonderful results. ^_^
What's aquarelle btw? *has always been curious*

Date: 2009-03-29 02:08 pm (UTC)I got deep red / indigo / dark blue from Anubis as well, and checked with the client first who agreed. So I'm really glad with that. Though I love the warmer colours with Bast as well.
And yeah, it can be done in stages totally!! Make sure you get properly waterfast fineliners though, if you want to do watercolours or something similar over them.

Date: 2009-03-29 11:02 am (UTC)I love how in the shading there's darkdark blue and deep purple and a lighter blue highlight. I remember you said fairly recently that you liked shadings creatures that are black or white because the colours for highlights or shadows aren't. How do you figure out what colours to use?
And I'd like to know what aquarelle is too :) I was going to ask one day but I can't remember if I actually did or not.

Date: 2009-03-29 02:06 pm (UTC)As for what colours to use in the blacks... it just depends really on what sort of feel I want to go for. In my 'Risa' picture, I went for violet and browns. In many of my crow pictures, I tend to use a lot of greens and browns. In ravens, it's violet and blue...
I haven't done much by the way of red-based black yet, except in my 'Raven as Fire' picture.

And you should definitely do Vilturj gods as animals, that's be so awesome! I always find the mythology that you talk about really interesting. It's probably the set of gods and whatnot that I find most intriguing nowadays.

Date: 2009-03-29 11:10 pm (UTC)I'd be interested in portraying Artemis as a female wolf though, or a female doe or something.
I've been thinking about it all night.
Oh noes!
