The red panda is also known as the shining cat, the firefox (sound familiar? Heh), lesser panda, fat fox, and fire fox. It's also known as the 'cutest damned thing ever.' There is a pair at Perth Zoo.

Information on Red Panda as a totem can be found here.

Oh! That's beautiful!

I did a three-day fast/vision quest once, and found that my personal totem is the direwolf. Of course, my totem would be an extinct predator the size of a Volkswagon! Do you ever work on commission? I'd love a direwolf painting. ;)

I'm not doing commissions at the moment right now, but I will probably be doing a dire wolf down the track since there's someone else on my Flist who has a profound connection with them (it's a small world!) :)

It's great to know I'm not the only one! If he or she ever needs someone to compare notes with, please send them my way...

That would be me. :-) I've been working with Dire Wolf via both totemic and therianthropic connections for a few years now.

I don't follow a shamanistic path as much as I probably should, but Dire Wolf comes to me a lot in dreams.

Is there any particular color or sound or whatnot that he prefers? I'd like to honor him appropriately, but short of large quantities of meat, I'm not sure what he would like. ;)

Well, working with totems can be a very personal thing so you may find ways to honor Dire Wolf that I haven't. Or he may want different things from you than from me. But if it helps, I personally connect dire wolves to the blacks and dark greys you find when you look at their skull which have been stained by the tar pits. I've never offered him meat, but I did ask him about it and was told he would prefer wild meat over domesticated beef. He also enjoys salmon. He finds the smells of pine to be pleasant as well. I've found Dire Wolf to be a very quiet and often distant totem for the most part. He prefers things that remind him of the time when his children were alive and isn't too keen on "modern" things. He does appreciate any attempt to learn about the paleolithic past. He prefers attempts to understand the animals and people of North America's last Ice Age, but he is satisfied with me learning and working with any prehistoric images such as the cave paintings found in Europe. Visiting any places that help you reflect on the ancient past is good too, such as museums, canyons, caves, and glacial fields. (I see you're from Austin, so you may want to check out Dinosaur Valley State Park which is kinda near by). I recently was gifted with a fossil dire wolf tooth and that really helped contact, but I'll bet something like petrified wood would do just fine as well.
If you go to YouTube you can find some clips from a National Geographic special on dire wolves as well as some videos done by tygerwulfe a friend of mine who also works with Dire Wolf.

Thank you so much!
I have a minor in paleoanthropology...I've traveled to most of the paleolithic sites in France and Spain, and hope to make it to some of the sites in Siberia someday.
After meeting Dire Wolf when I was 17, I learned flint knapping and I've done some study of paleolithic plants...both for their edible and healing properties.

Three years ago, I was living in New Orleans and was trapped in the city for nine days of hell during Katrina. I walked and waded for miles each day, bringing food and water to trapped people and pets. On the second day, a huge black dog found me and was my constant companion each day...he wandered off each night, and vanished for good on the day I finally left.

I looked for him for months when I went back, but never saw him again. I'm convinced he was sent by Dire Wolf to protect me and to help guide me to those who needed help. He was a great comfort to me, and leant me strength when I needed it most.
xoxo

Wow, your paleoanthropology studies must be very fascinating. I'd love to visit the prehistoric caves of Europe someday. I became fascinated with flint during some amature archealogy that my family did and it is a goal of mine to learn flint knapping. I only have a book on it which I need to study. And Dire Wolf wants me to learn other primitive skills as well.
I'm so sorry about your experience with Katrina. Last year, I went through Hurricane Ike and a week of living in Houston which was blacked out and torn up. But that was nothing compared to what New Orleans or even Galveston went through. I grew up near the coast and much of the places of my childhood are devestated. :-( Also, *hugs you* for helping aid the people and animals during Katrina. It still makes me cry to think about that what happened.
The black dog could very well have been from Dire Wolf. Also, you might be interested in researching black dog folklore in general. Black dogs have a *very* long and deep history of showing up to protect folks.
May I friend you? *blushes* I'd be interested in learning more about your paleolithic studies but don't want to tie up poor Pia's journal.

I saw your comment and I've made a direwolf painting recently. It was for someone else, but it's uploaded here if you're interested in viewing :) It was my first time drawing a dire wolf so it's not such a good picture though.

At the moment, it's been put on hold for a month for the client, which means it will probably sell. I am offering prints on DeviantArt though - the print file should get approved in the next 12 hours. Sorry!

*grin* Yay! I was going to post a comment asking if you were, because I have a friend who identifies strongly with red pandas, even though what he is is Siberian Tiger. (A spoiled domesticated one, so far as can be seen *grin*) I was hoping to buy a print for him in the nearish future. Thanks so much!

Shifu!!!

We had to watch Kung Fu Panda with the commentary on before I learned that Shifu (the cute one with the big ears and long whiskers) is a red panda. They are neat.
