Redoing Black Swan as Firebird

Using the same colour of paper as last time, since it looks so damned good. My full collection of pastels is on the right. Winsor Newtons, Carbothellos, and then a motley bunch of Rembrandts, Schminkes and something else I can't remember. Drew a border around the pastel paper because that's the smart thing to do.

Sketching in pastel pencil.

I've finished sketching! Whee!

Applying colour. Here you can see that I move the pastel paper around in all directions while I'm working. Trusty malleable eraser on the left.

Post applying; pre-blending.

Blending! Don't touch your clothes!

Post blending, first round.

The face here has been touched up with malleable eraser, and I've removed some of the sketch lines.

And now I am eating a breakfast peppermint trumpet to celebrate.

Yay! Your pastel work is so pretty!

Chrome is only showing half of the some of the pictures, but they load fine in their own tab. Odd...

Seeing the process is always very interesting. To me it adds to the beauty of the finished work, to know just how much went into creating it!

Agreed. ^_^

And the artwork is amazing, too.

I especially love the insight into how all this amazingly awesome art is created, too.

This is fantastic to watch unfold, thanks for sharing :) I really want to learn to work with pastels, they're so beautiful to look at! One more thing to put on my "to do" list!

Watching the process is always interesting to me. I wish I'd kept up with the pastels work from when I was good at it in junior high. I have both chalk and oil pastels, but no idea how to get back into using them again...

If I have to use colour pastels are my fave medium :-) But I have to ask, what do you do at the end with it? How do you stop the pastels from rubbing off into one gunky mess?

I put a piece of glassine (non-porous paper) over it, and then paperclip it on. And then store it under lots more 'glassined pastel pictures.' I don't use fixative, because fixative is evil.

Pastel pictures aren't really safe until they're in a glass or perspex frame though, unfortunately. :/

What's the best method of cleaning pastels or chalk from your skin?

Is it like printer toner, in that water just spreads it around more?

I just use soap and water, but I have to wait a few days for the skin to actually die / fall off to get rid of most of the pigment. Especially in reds and dark blues / purples. Which can make my fingers look munted for up to two weeks.

Yay, i love your in progress shots. And that color paper is beautiful. I've only played with soft pastels a little bit, but someday i'd love to have a studio space where i can play with them again. <3

Excited to see another of your firebird pictures.

I love that colour paper, I have like an additional three sheets - no idea what I'm gonna do with them!

Hmm, is that the tooth of the paper showing through on the last shot?

If so, it looks really cool.

Apparently, I should have replied about the pastels on this thread rather than the other one, lol. Ah well, c'est la vie, right?

This looks really cool, btw.
