What do you mean she got her drip out? She's high as a kite! - To which we said 'oh, it's nice to see she's as mischeivous doped up as she is sober.' She had removed her drip. Here she is, shaved everywhere, spacey. She needed a fentanyl patch for the pain. We're looking at between $1500 -> $2000 for costs; provided nothing goes wrong in recovery.

Which earnt her the nickname Fentanyl Kitty

High as a Kite - You can see on the chart that at the earliest, we're not going to be getting her home until tomorrow evening. She gets tested on foods tomorrow. Right now it's costing us $1500, but with observation, pain meds, drips and so on, it's looking to cost us closer to $2000 by the time this is all over and done with. Yes, they offer payment plans, but they ask for 50% upfront, which is still our savings.

SpaceMaybe - When I started talking to her soothingly, she started kneading her paws and reached out to me. The vet tech said I could stay all night and talk to all the animals! Poor Maybe. She had no idea what was going on.

Maybe Van Ravenstein - They spelt our last name wrong, but okay.

Problems - To the left you can see the two obstructions, they are pom poms (each about the size of a fat almond) from a cat toy that cost $10.00 - she played with it for two months before she decided to eat the pom poms yesterday. She threw one up. Because we caught it so early, no bowel had to be removed, the vet was very pleased. On the right you can see the complete ovary and part of the uterus that the vet who sterilised her missed. Because of this, it is likely she was producing some level of unspayed cat hormones, and may have even gone into heat, without being able to do anything about it.

Oh baby girl, we'll see you soon - when I said goodbye to her, she started kneading her paws again. I wish I could stay.

Long day - Waiting for Dr. Barry to come out and talk to us about what to expect. The days when she's going to show signs of infection and leakage are days three to five - when we have her home - the symptoms will be throwing up and abdominal pain. It's unlikely, because we caught it so early, her bowels were 'fresh', and they seem pretty on the ball with care. But it's good to know. The surgeon who actually worked on Maybe (and noticed the ovary/uterus lining) was called Ariadne. Which I liked. I said thank you to the surgeon, but I'll be saying thank you to the deity too.

Thank you guys, for all being so amazing with this stuff. We all say thank you. Well, except for Maybe, who probably has the munchies or something, or is right now trying to remove her drip, like the Maybe we've come to know and love.

Date: 2010-05-19 10:20 am (UTC)The vet nurse and I kind of laughed though, about the fact that Maybe ate not one, but three of them (she threw one up). As the nurse says, 'what possesses a cat to go 'hmm, that was hard to swallow, better eat the other ones.'
ALL of our cat toys are getting binned, aside from the Kongs. Sigh. Actually, we could probably give away the new packets of catnip mice to people with older cats. Or just keep them for when Maybe is older herself and less likely to try and kill herself with toys.

Date: 2010-05-19 10:15 am (UTC)I'm sorry it was so expensive though! I never would have guessed. It's like surgery for humans. :/
Also: with her eyes all wide like that, she looks spacey. Lol.
I can't wait til she's back home!
Looked up Ariadne. That's a pretty kickass name.

Date: 2010-05-19 10:21 am (UTC)Oh yeah, it is, pretty much. Although, this is still cheaper than the same sort of surgery for a human. And while we're sad that it'll be... a struggle to recoup savings, we'd do anything for Maybe to make sure she's okay, so it's worth it.
I can't wait until she's home and has the cone of shame off her head. :)

Date: 2010-05-19 10:28 am (UTC)You're going to have fun with the cone of shame. If she's taken a drip out I wouldn't be surprised if she somehow manages to yank the cone off her head or destroy it.

Date: 2010-05-19 10:31 am (UTC)Oh god I knoooooooow. Thankfully the vet is only five minutes away, and in the meantime I could probably make an artificial one out of art supplies (I have weird things in my art supplies).
Then again, before Maybe and Moet, I had a brilliant veteran of the cat species known as Smokey, and he was a ruffian. And he left his cone of shame on, despite trying to scratch it off. So I'll keep my fingers crossed. Maybe figures some stuff out (like climbing the fridge) but not other stuff (like the catflap). We'll see? Heh.

Date: 2010-05-19 12:57 pm (UTC)It's a pity cat toys aren't put through stringent tests like kids toys. If that had been a kids toy they'd be removed from the shelves immediately and you'd probably get a huge compo payout but because it's a cat the bigwigs don't care. }:-\
And a bit of a worry that the vet who sterilsed her missed some of the important bits that needed to be removed!

Date: 2010-05-19 01:47 pm (UTC)I'm really not surprised by the dangerous nature of the cat toys, frankly. At least two thirds of what is marketed as dog toys is potentially lethal as well, and should only be given where appropriate, and then supervised, too. Even then it's problematic, because it only takes a second for an animal to get into trouble -- but what's the alternative? Raising them with no toys whatsoever? Then you're virtually guaranteed that they'll *find* something completely unsuitable to play with. :D These are the the conundrums of living with a companion animal... Date: 2010-05-20 01:09 am (UTC)I'm really glad they did, she was in a lot of pain. It was awful holding her when the vet was palpating the abdomen and got to the obstruction. He made a very worried face, and my heart broke, because Maybe was just very distressed. I am so glad it's out of her now, and the pain she's in is - fingers crossed - healing pain, and not 'obstruction' pain.
I will be very happy when she takes food.
I literally don't know if we can afford a collapsible crate right now, even a cheap one. I have $36 in all my accounts, to last me until Monday for everything - food, petrol, everything. I had to clean out my accounts for this.
I have money in Paypal, but that won't clear into my bank accounts until about the same day (and maybe later), so we'll need to figure something out in the meantime, because she will be home before Monday.
At least I'm home 24/7. And we recently invested in some more microfleece throw rugs for the cats (and ourselves), so I can make some comfortable beds on the floor in a couple of rooms and supervise.
but what's the alternative? Raising them with no toys whatsoever?
I was thinking 'oh god, what did she get into,' and when Glen and I realised it was a cat toy we were horrified. I mean you try and be good parents getting these toys to help keep them stimulated, and it almost killed her. :/
We'll still be getting toys, but I'm rethinking what I have to get. I think most 'cat toys' will be off the market now. Thankfully City Farmers has the complete range of Kong cat toys, and I trust Kong more than I trust other brands.

Date: 2010-05-20 12:58 am (UTC)It shocks me that anyone could just 'leave it' if a cat vomited 12 times over night, without a history of vomiting. :( But that + her being off her food were huge red flags. The poor thing. She was also lying differently to usual, so I figured she was in abdominal pain.
They're my babies, I'd be horrified if I didn't know if they weren't well.
I hope she feels better soon, too.

Date: 2010-05-19 03:42 pm (UTC)So sad though. I am sorry she ate indigestible things and cost lots of money and worry. :( I am glad it seems you got a competent, thorough vet, though. And that she had an owner who took her illness seriously and did the best thing for her. I know so many who people wouldn't have.. would have just said, 'she'll get over it or she won't.' or 'it's too expensive.
Anyway, much love for you and Maybe.

Oh yeah, I go by word of mouth and research, but I don't compromise on vets. And any vet that says 'you can come check out our surgical room and equipment at any time' is a vet that's confident in its premises. We could've maybe saved a couple of hundred taking her to a different vet, but why compromise on care? I want to make sure she lives, not 'scrapes through with a secondary infection.'

The most disgusting part was he didn't even leave it where it was supposed to be, it was like they'd left it active in a different spot. So wrong. :(
