Baby Cassowary - there were two. I had no idea these guys were even there, it's not like Caversham was advertising this at all. And they were in a completely accessible area, I mean 'reach down and touch them' area, although you wouldn't, you know, because they look at you like 'GET NEAR ME AND I'LL SOMEWHAT KILL YOU.'

Australian Raven - I was probably more fascinated by the Australian ravens hanging around the outside of the enclosures than I was the actual animals in the enclosures sometimes.

Aawwwwwrrrrhrhhhhhhhhhh

Some Kind of Bettong - I want to say Burrowing Bettong, but I was kind of dissociating heavily this morning, and I don't actually remember, my photographic memory for these things disappeared and I was left with a normal human ability to remember animal names. Fail.

They make sounds like starting motorbikes. Seriously.

Mother of two joeys waking up. So cute!

Bush Stone Curlew - for some reason, I always think these guys kind of look like they're just starting to come down from meth or something, and they're at that stage where their really seriously contemplating sticking a knife in your face and going 'GIVE ME YOUR MONEY, FOO!' You know, he's really thinking about it.

Leetle Crocodile

Some Kind of Goat - Argh, they had a name on the sign, seriously, sigh. I thought of
bewylderbeast when I saw all the goats. :)

Hairy-Nosed Wombat - Maybe. Of course with my dissociation, this could just be an extremely snub-nosed pig or something. No, I'm pretty sure it's a wombat.

Indian Peacock - Starting to grow in his breeding plumage. Nom.

Your animal ID skillz shine through!

Date: 2010-04-17 05:59 am (UTC)There's a donkey there and she's learnt to open her mouth for kids to throw food in, because most kids are scared of her. And I felt sorry for her, so I went up and gave her like three handfuls of pellets and just put them up under her mouth. She was ever so polite. And the kids were like 'Mum! Mum! Look!' So I showed a few kids how to feed a donkey without throwing the food in. :)
It struck me how many kids just have no idea about this stuff I take for granted.

Date: 2010-04-16 01:45 pm (UTC)I'm familiar with your Stone Bush-Curlew from zoological collections, but also because of the related Eurasian Stone Curlew. They always remind me of vintage movie stars with their enormous eyes (and somewhat stoned expression).
And a wombat! I like wombats. Amazing creatures. I'll refrain from making yum yum noises about the goat because I know there are people who love them as pets, but...

Date: 2010-04-17 03:28 am (UTC)The wombat sort of reminds me of my mom's pugs in a weird demented way.
