I see you like onions (presumably you're making a sir-fry?). I consider onions a staple myself. With a basic stock onions, garlic, beans, potatoes, and rice you can make a huge variety of different dishes just by varying the other ingredients used. They often don't get used much in cooking here for some reason, and I don't know why. (There's no reason locally -- onions grow here very well!)
And now you've made me think about what I'm going to make for dinner for myself this evening, since I'm going to be by myself...
I really do love onions, and yeah, was making my home-made sweet & sour. Onions, garlic, rice, pasta, noodles (some combination thereof) tends to be our stock bases. I can't remember the last time I *didn't* put onion in something I made. Heh.
