Victoria fires...

I'm not sure if any of you are aware outside of Australia, but currently there are 20 out of control bushfires of epic proportions raging in Victoria. Over 50 people have lost their lives, and that's a conservative estimate. It already has a Wikipedia article - which reports 65 dead and 640 homes burnt to the ground.
As well as the victims of this tragedy, can you please keep my friend and spiritual brother-in-arms
riven_scythe in your thoughts at this time; he's currently got all his belongings packed with his family and is waiting to see if they'll need to evacuate their house, as the fires are predicted to hit their area soon.

There's supposed to be a southerly chnage tonigt, but I am afraid it'll just blow the fires up more. No rain in the forecast for the Hunter 'til Tuesday night. :-( Hope VIC ad SA get some relief.

Date: 2009-02-08 08:39 am (UTC)What's so so sad are the families who were burnt in their homes, and those who were evacuating in their cars and never made it.
Western Australia is expected to get hit pretty hard by bushfires this week; but not as badly as Victoria. We don't get anything like those fires over here.
The irony? The North part of Australia is currently devastated by floods / flash-flooding.

Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Date: 2009-02-09 01:00 pm (UTC)At this point we're sitting relatively safe in Seymour, with major thanks to the Goulburn River and all the efforts of those fighting the fires. There isn't a heck of a lot of information available to us at the moment (the DSE and CFA websites are a joke for trying to get information on fire locations).
At the moment, they're expecting over 200 dead, but it'll be a while before they get the fires under control enough to be able to access all areas to locate victims.
Much love and thanks,
Riven
