Northern Harrier (Hawk) as Totem

Also known as the hen harrier, marsh hawk and harrier hawk (although true harrier hawks are found in Africa and Madagascar). They are commonly found in rural areas, wetlands and swamps. In the UK they are hunted as a pest (because they hunt game birds too, oh no! Silly humans), resulting in regional extinctions, and there are - approxinately 10-20 breeding pairs left. To read more about the Northern harrier's persecution, go here:

That is probably the most realistic looking hawk you've done yet. Bravo! I simply love it.

You seem to have done the feathers in a different way this time, is there any reason for that?

Their plumage is so so so mottled and I wanted to try a new way of conveying that. It wasn't that time-effective though. Basically fineliner, watercolour pencil, pencil, blending, pencil, blending, washes of acrylic, acrylic highlights...

Heh.

heh, really? I mean they are kinda cute but there are too many of them. :P

There are a lot, but the 'too many of them' is very reflective on there being 'too many of us,' and as I don't hate humans, I don't hate pigeons. I kinda like them. They're just exploiting the suburbs in the same way that we do.

This is my favorite of your raptors so far! The face is incredible, and i love the dotted white arc of feathers. Also love how you handled the mottled body feathers. <3

This is absolutely amazing, [livejournal.com profile] moonvoice! [livejournal.com profile] shatterpath and I are thrilled with this, and we know [livejournal.com profile] amyrayh will be when we give her the original...

Sending an email in just a few with my yay!

I'm still debating showing [livejournal.com profile] amyrayh the drawing before the original gets here or not. She knows she's getting it, but that's it...

Hmm...

**VERY NICE** We have a pair of marsh hawks here at the marina--I love to watch them hunt.

Oh, man! We have those everywhere right now. Such a handsome little female you've got there! And you certainly pegged her attitude. They're not quite as bad as kestrels or ferruginous hawks, but they're still VERY much large and in charge, and her eyes say it all.

Awesome work, as always :)

It's just gorgeous. Your feathers get softer & more alive on each bird you do. If I was your agent I would so pimp you out making bird-watching field guides.
