The glyphs in this section include:

pretty much all that I know about D'miezak'r (within reason)
and Vavale

Narwhal / D'miezak'r (pron. Deh-MEE-zack-urr)

The narwhal is the Vilturj representation of the moon god D'miezak'r, a sullen, melancholy young wedded to Zniliajana, the midnight star (Karajana the sun goddess' other incarnation). The tooth/horn of the narwhal is clearly phallic. The narwhal is not considered a creature 'independent' of the god. In other words, any physical manifestation of the narwhal (female or male) IS a manifestation god himself, and the animal is sacred. It's not a case where narwhals simply 'represent' D'miezak'r. In our mythology all narwhals ARE D'miezak'r.

D'miezak'r

A more esoteric depiction of the moon god. The symbol itself also represents a path to the upperworlds, (the upward triangle to the crescent moon), as well as the narwhal tooth/horn + the moon. This glyph is used in some initiations, and as a tattoo on male initiates of D'miezak'r.

Marriage / Karijiana and D'miezak'r / Zniliajana and D'miezak'r

The esoteric depiction of the marriage between Karijiana and D'miezak'r. This is very symbolic and I don't really have time to go into it all - but essentially, the horn of the narwhal in this picture represents the phallus, and the wavy lines on either side represent the vaginal walls of Karijiana as well as the sun's rays (she is a sun goddess) as well as the rays of the midnight star. This is a very powerful symbol not often used in ritual simply because it essentially invokes the presence of the midnight star, the sun, the moon, sexual union between the gods and the moment of orgasm itself (shown in the midnight star, or the small dot above the crescent moon). Okay... that will do for now.

The Beluga and the Narwhal / Karijiana and D'miezak'r

A literal depiction of Karijiana as the Beluga (as all narwhals are D'miezak'r, so all belugas are Karijiana and thus are sacred) and D'miezak'r as the Narwhal. In coloured depictions the Narwhal is black, representative of the darker aspects of the otherworlds, and the Beluga is white, representative of the lighter aspects.

Vavale

The swamp goddess Vavale is depicted here (related to stories regarding Baba Yaga). The inverted 'V' represents the steep roof of her home, the 'u' within representing the cauldron that she cooks kids in - heh - and also the crone's vagina which is 'shielded' from men by the home that is housed around it. The two unbroken lines below the house represent the swamp or wetlands, and the three broken lines below that represent her three horsemen, or the three hands that help Vavale out at times. The horizontal lines on either side of the house represent the protective fence that makes it hard to reach Vavale and/or the forest itself.

Dammit, have to run. Going to Glen's for dinner. :)

Yes, thanks. How do you use these? Is it safe for one un-connected to the Vilturj to incorporate them into their own practice, or would this be offensive?

Actually, most of the glyphs (with exceptions of one representing dangerous gods, like Vavale / Lesavny) can be used by anyone, pretty much. The difference being that they may not have much power to them when drawn / used. Since they are attached to symbolism that isn't really echoed outside of Vilturj (for example, with Narwhal + D'miezak'r), the actual power of the symbol can be lost especially if you've never forged a connection with the god itself.

As for their use, they were used for anything from initiatory tattoos, to carvings on spirit sticks (sticks left beside trees in offering), to carvings on rocks and paintings on people during initiatory procedures, to invocations in snow or sand or water during ritual etc. etc. These are pretty flexible.

We aren't too precious with the glyphs, as they were left in public places, for anyone to find - it was expected that if people knew what they meant, they would be understood, and if they didn't, they would be left alone. :)

Hmm, I am not sure to what extent I would be willing to go as far as interacting with your gods. They are unfamiliar to me, and yet I feel attracted to certain aspects of your gods, most particularly Lesavny. He kind of reminds me a little of Loki, and a little of Volos. Am I very far from the mark?

I think of Loki and Lesavny being miles apart, miles and miles apart - but maybe that's because Lesavny pretty much *is* the forest, and Loki hasn't really been characterised as being anything much more than a trickster, or malicious, or occasionally very handsome whilst womanising others! Lol.

If you are interested in Lesavny though, there's more about him here:

http://www.wildspeak.com/vilturr/deities/lesavny.html

It is in his nature to draw people to him - who become interested in him - but it's also in his nature to harm them in some way. He is often likened to a sweet smelling poison, and most people experience a 'lure' due to his charisma. In Vilturj it was recommended that if you recognised the lure, you stayed away from it for a few years! Lol. :)

In fact, I'd almost liken him most - to any god in the Norse pantheon - to Freajr (Frey), due to the forest symbolism, the appearance of horns on the body, the hunting symbolism and the fertile aspect.

I think what I am seeing in him is the dangerous, yet alluring charisma of Loki, and the wild, untamed and savavge aspect of Volos. I was not directly referring to their sphere of influence. I forgot that you have a more traditional view of Loki. We will have to discuss him in more depth one of these days, perhaps you can see where I am coming from (although you may not agree with my view of the trickster).

=)

I would look forward to that conversation. :)
Do you have MSN at all? While I can't use it today (I have a friend visiting from the Eastern states), IM might be a good way to hash out some of the differences and similarities in our beliefs.

Don't send e-mail there though, I lost my password eons ago and would never receive what you were sending.

Right on... I'll probably want to talk of other things at first though. I plan on explaining my ideas about the trickster in [profile] hel_heim first, and then I will be willing to discuss them on messanger. I will clip and paste the post into an IM or e-mail for your benefit, and we can take the discussion from there. =)
