It's thankfully not impacting us here or in many of the other states, but flooding has reached Victoria (an entirely separate state) now. The worst has stopped in Queensland, but... yeah. Not good.
It's not; thousands of fish have turned up dead already not so much because of the muddy water, but because of the fresh water being pumped into the sea from the dam. Just can't handle it.
Wow, that really is a great website, thanks for sharing. I haven't been following the news online, mostly on TV, so having the pictures really puts it in perspective.
Did you catch how a lot of the insurance agencies are now refusing to pay due to it not being the "right kind" of flood? Really sad for a lot of people who didn't understand what type of flood insurance they had... I hope they get enough money from the relief appeal to get back on their feet if that's the case. I've been taking notes on the good insurance companies (SunCorp has flood insurance as a regular part -not additional- of their home insurance which is really impressive imo) - I reckon they should name and shame all the bad ones!
Yeah. There's actually a lot of people who also never got flood insurance because of the floods of '74, most insurance companies no longer offered flood insurance to people who lived near the Brisbane river. :/ It's not good. But I remember reading one of the articles where a shop owner was essentially 'we won't get insurance, it's the risk you take for being this close to the river.'
But I imagine a lot of people didn't know that, or read the fine print. :(
I can't remember what kind of insurance we get, but we went through RAC, who are pretty good at not short-changing their customers.
Yeah, I'm taking back my comments about SunCorp today after watching a news report just now on them. They have, along with a few others subsidiaries put an embargo on any other insurance companies offering new insurance policies to people in the Brisbane/QLD flooded areas - and they've upped their policies by almost 30% for some (one guy's policy has gone up $600+ since last year due to the company trying to recoup their losses - and he hasn't even been flooded!) One woman reported her car insurance with AAMI I think it was went up between the letter being sent for her policy renewal and when she went to pay it online a few days later - like whaaaa?
Very sad indeed, people can't even go to other insurance providers offering better deals because of this embargo...
Wow, what a mess. :( What in the world are those people doing floating around in a spa in the last photo? And I saw another where it looked like people were in inflatable pool chairs. It can't be good to be out in that dirty water.
There's a lot of people that aren't really taking it that serious - yay for the Aussie "she'll be right mate!" attitude LOL But yeah, I agree, I wouldn't want to be in some of those waters, who knows what's in them - there was a report on a truck mechanic's sheds being submerged and a fair bit of oil and such getting into the water, not sure I'd want that on me...
I'd be concerned not only about the chemicals floating around, but also about human and animal waste in the water. I guess it's nice to see people being a little lighthearted about the whole thing though.
