[Photos] Ellenbrook Park
Jul. 2nd, 2019 06:09 pmSo, bemusingly, Ellenbrook now has a 'central park' along the main stretch that is designed for picnics, barbecues and more. It's been well designed, and it will eventually have suburbs and commercial areas around it. Ellenbrook is, after all, one of the best planned cities in the world.
HOWEVER, to my immense satisfaction and also like, total what-the-fuckery, the park is EXTREMELY PAGAN. I don't know how to describe this to people who don't know, so I'll just describe it more for people who do - there is a concerted use of thresholds, centering, sacred geometry and the actual invocation of Venus set in literal marble before a seven spoked star entwined in words that sound more like spellcrafting. It's...incredible. There is writing after writing set down into the stone, centred in the location, located at a threshold, speaking of Venus repeatedly. Like, it's really quite layered and thoughtfully done.
I don't have photos of much of this, because it was slowly coming together in my head as I walked around the park.
There has also been a real genuine effort to co-mingle the Noongar culture along with that of the settlers who came here. This reflects in both the architecture and sculptures (including sculptures of reefs alongside Victorian style teapots, it's hard to explain), along with Eucalpytus motifs and similar.
While we were at the park, a bunch of Carnaby's black cockatoos flew in and quite happily stayed around.
Most of the trees are very young right now.

Across the road from the park.

A photo from Gnangara Road that slipped in.

One of the sculptures. Representing a fruiting tree and abundance.

Yellow kangaroo paw

Maritime pines

Across the road from the park, land yet to be developed.

The sculpture of a shell, to represent Venus

Sorry, I'm just trying to imagine a city planner being like 'no no, this is totally Christian, it's very legit. I mean how bad can it be? She's a goddess of LOVE.' And everyone like 'yeah okay.'

Totally normal, to talk about the souls of the dead at a park that is central in Ellenbrook.

The Reef sculpture, connected to the Noongar connection and, yes, the souls of the dead. (Not shown, all the spoked wheels in the ground, the stars, and the geometry, lmao).

This is a small sculpture and frankly, I love it. There are like four 'private' gardens (they are given their own thresholds) and all of them have different styles of seating and are dedicated to a different significant person in the Swan Valley. This one, I believe, is for the Lady of Ellenbrook.

Anyway, this park DELIGHTS me.
