[Photos] Wildlife - Birbs (Cape Barren Goose, Glossy Ibis, Cattle Egret)

I really love egrets.
And ibis.
And cape barren geese.

The cape barren goose male did a run and display at me while I was standing there with my camera, and I can't blame him, because he had a female and he was being all bold and protective. Thankfully there was a fence between us because those fuckers are a metre tall.

He was displaying here too and giving me some major side-eye.



Look he is a super serious dad.



Dinobirb. Seriously, a lot of people talk about Cassowaries as the ultimate dinobirb, and I see that, I do, but these guys are HUGE and there's some rumours that they may be related to flightless megafauna in New Zealand.

Cattle egrets are so great! They're just starting to come into their breeding plumage at the moment too :D

Tbh if there wasn't a fence between me and that goose I would've been pretty intimidated. They meant business for sure. :D

Yeah, messing with a goose will only end in pain.

That said, I accidentally discovered years ago they *really* don't like sunnies, especially mirror shades. Had a 'standard' goose come at me in my late teens, and then back off and totally not run the hell away, nooo because I was wearing said shades, possibly not helped by my complete lack of backing down.

Which was really a Not Very Smart Move in retrospect, but no-one got injured, thankfully.

I really like the first glossy ibis picture. The colour, the action, the texture of the grass, the balance of bird vs green space... the whole 9 yards.

Thank you! I'm lucky though, I mean it's at a wildlife park and Caversham is very good at making the backgrounds look more natural. Though I try and angle away from fences where possible too. It's a challenge sometimes!

The goose looks much bulkier than the geese I'm used to, and I wouldn't want to get rushed by one of them, either!

Yeah, the Cape Barren geese are *large* even by Australian geese standards. Their head would easily go above an average person's hips. I'd say they could easily knock someone down. They're larger than the swans I've seen, so I'm glad there was a fence between us!
