It's an alpaca farm that decided to expand into a petting farm, and then expanded a bit more. They sell rabbits and chicks and alpacas and well...lots of animals. Glen and I are kind of a sucker for these places? I used to think it was just me, and then the last two times we went away, Glen suggested we go and I realised it wasn't just me. And then one day Glen suggested he wanted a goat and a pig and a cow and I realised it REALLY wasn't just me. O.O

Glen really loves alpacas? Like he really loves them. But it also turned out he was a little timid re: feeding them.

















Dear camel, I am not sure if this is your ideal environment.






I have to admit, I spent an inordinate amount of time petting the calf (which is still on bottle feeds). Like, so much time we deliberately circled around just so I could pat and coo (and thoroughly embarrass myself) some more. They had a lot more animals but it was rainy and I was more interested in petting than taking photos, so this is all I have.

Aren't they? :D We have a lot of local alpaca farms where I live, and seeing them when we drive out of the suburb is awesome.

Alpacas are lovely (and tasty... *whistles*) but I was most diverted by the photo of the Highland cow(? steer?). I am inordinately fond of ancient/primitive breeds of livestock.

I'd love to try alpaca meat, though I haven't seen it available here (doesn't mean it wouldn't be at a specialty butcher though). And yes, highland cow! (Or steer, heh). They were very sweet and really lovely, and I don't think many of the kids went to that part of the park to hand-feed them, so I spent a lot of time there getting slobbered on by highland cows which just made me remarkably happy.

I've met some Highland cattle and they struck me as generally more intelligent than the "average" cow. This makes sense -- Longhorn cattle (of which we have many here, and many crosses because they are tough and can manage for themselves on meager range and against predators) are also relatively clever. It comes from having to make their own way in a hostile environment, as opposed to being bred for docility and flesh/milk production.

Re: alpaca meat, thinking of it inevitably reminded me of Peru. Llama steak and a nice Chilean red were a wonderful treat after hiking the Inca trail. Mmmm. It sounds like a ridiculously small thing but the restaurant also had agua tonica, and and I had *such* a craving after being long on the road. It was divine. Llama and alpaca of course taste very similar -- softer and sweeter than beef, and soemwhat like camel (which makes sense since they are all nearly related). I have such a yen to travel again for pleasure (and not just for the food) but alas I must be patient a while longer.

Oh! We have a ton of black cockatoos in Australia! Well, when I say a ton...I mean like, all of the world's six species can be found here. We pretty regularly see flocks of them. They're the largest parrots in Australia too. (And the largest all-black birds in Australia, beating out our ravens by a fair amount).
