[Art] What I'm currently working on.

This is primarily for fun,
and a bit of a test run to get back into the soft pastels
since it's been a really long time since I've worked with soft pastels.
Anyway here:
have a Totoro and a Catbus.
Totally work in progress!

Bwaaaa, so cute! :D I envy your skills with pastels, because I am brutally bad with them. It's like... welcome to smudge town.

Lol, it takes a while. A handy trick is using the outer edge of your little finger for smudging around the edges. It's a far finer point than the index finger.

Also, smudging outside of the lines and neatening back in with a malleable eraser = totes helpful.

Cheery! How do you pick your paper colour?

Intuition? I prefer working on the darker colours. I'm actually using the pink because I want to use up the paper and I don't think I'll use it for a larger project (I usually stick to black, blues, dark browns and dark reds).

But, one of the tricks I was taught by a pastel artist is to choose a shade of paper based on one of two things: 1 - what colour will predominantly be in your work - if navy, for example, then choose navy paper as an asset in the process of colouring. OR, go the opposite direction, and choose something specifically for contrast. I.e. blue paper when a piece will be primarily red. :)

But I tend to go by instinct. :)
