On Saturday, Putu, Glen and I went to the Museum of Western Australia
(and then to Korean BBQ)
and then we went home and watched the rest of season 1 Fringe (which is like my 10th time rewatching, but yay!)

I used to spend a lot of time drawing the stuffed mammals. They didn't move and the light never changed :-)

I got there early enough to turn the lights on myself more than a few times, and I got to know some of the security guards.

We used to have to draw taxidermied animals a lot at highschool. I remember this sort of poorly done parrot and I have like... 20 different pictures of it, and I considered it a mark of success if I could get it's eyes properly cock-eyed. *grin*

I wish I had spent more time at the museum when I was younger. I think I may have only been once, or maybe twice before, as a child.

:D I hope you get to see the inside of that museum one day too! It's quite a small museum, but the exhibitions are really thoughtfully done and maximise space in a really intelligent way. I wish I'd taken some more photos of the old Perth Gaol though - the noose was creepy.

It looks like a good museum! Now I'm a bit miffed that my sister never suggested we go there when I was visiting. I'll have to try and wrangle her into a visit, next time.

Some butterflies look so unreal. It's hard to imagine that they exist, just fluttering around in the real world.

I hope you can go the next time you visit! I'm surprised I haven't been more often, to be honest, in the past 10 years. It's lovely, and a lot of seating provided for those who need to rest, which was good for me, since I like just being able to sit down and soak up the atmosphere of a place.

The butterflies were amazing. The ones with all that glossy iridescence just blew my mind. How are they real? I can't imagine seeing them in the wild.

The skeletons were awesome. I wish I'd gotten some more shots, and I think I'd like to wander through alone and really soak it in. :D

That museum looks *super*. I was particularly taken with the side-by-side comparison of the Thylacine and dingo skulls (what *massive* teeth on the Thylacine), and is that second deer mount a Pere David's deer? If it's not I can't think what else it could be given the antler morph... (still sick, obviously, and can't brain).

I liked the Thylacine / Dingo comparison too, I thought that was a really thoughtful way of actually comparing the two. :D

I think so? I'm not actually sure, I didn't get a chance to look at the sign specifically for that deer; however I know they did have a couple of extinct / rare ones represented.

I still think so now that I'm not high on cold medications and stupid from being sick. It's got the long skinny rostrum, the prominent preorbital gland, and what really caught my attention, the "reversed" antlers(i.e. with the brow tine pointing backward). They are an amazing species! I'm excited second hand that you saw an actual mount. :D

The butterflies were amazing. Just kind of down a corridor, and really easy to miss if you weren't looking!

Amazing! I love these photos. This is the sort of place I'd love to visit. And it makes me wish I could show you the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

Oh I would love to see that so much. Perth museum is really quite small, I'd love to sort of go around to different museums, seeing different things. :D

*nods* I was just kind of... heartbroken and disappointed. I'm really glad the museum actually took the time to gather these quotes and put them up, because it's a more realistic perspective on what was happening - but it was very confrontational. :/
