[Art] Sunset Koi - pastels.

Sunset Koi

I've started scrapping around with my pastels again, and came up with this sunset koi one evening. I wasn't originally going to put this up anywhere, but a fellow artist friend told me she thought it was good and as I love and trust her judgement, I decided to put it up after all. Le made up sunset koi. :) Tis scrappy, but I didn't expect to be doing anything with it other than just...doodling.

Mi Tientes pastel paper, soft pastels, pastel pencils (carbothello), NO fixative.

I'm glad you put it up- the colours are beautiful. And it's a cloud fish rather than a sea fish- it's cool to see people just playing with different concepts like that.

It's not in any of my recent styles, but it's similar to work I used to do (and miss) from a long time ago. I hope to do more pieces like this. Pastels stretch my brain in a different way to ink/coloured pencil, and it's just good for me. Chalks are fun! :)

Scrappy?? Honestly, at first I thought you were showcasing a new picture you got from Mall ^^; So, no, not really THAT scrappy, just the caudal fin seems off with the bolder color streaks.

I love this (then again, I'm a sucker for the sunsent colors).

Scrappy! As you pointed out, the tail is a bit off, and I was ultra-lazy with the blending in the back half of the tail, so it doesn't look as 'night-skyish' as I wanted. But still. Sunset koi!

Utterly amazing. Is it on textured paper? I'm guessing not, but it *looks* textured.

Yeah, it's on heavily textured paper actually. Mi tientes is rough, and has a really rough tooth. Soft pastels need it. :)

The colors, the background....the whole thing works for me (I especially love the highlights in the eye), and I could look at it all of the time. Seriously.

It's a little mythic, isn't it? As though it could be part of a creation story on the movements of the sun and stars (or, uh, technically the planet, I suppose). I like the blending near the head of the koi, best; that orange-paper-pink-red-purple area.

Yeah, I do like cosmology and creation stories / mythologies. :) But mostly I just liked the idea of a magical koi that carried the secrets of the sunset within its rippling scales. :D

Oh wow! I really like this. And I love that the texture/tooth of the paper really shows through, particularly in the clouds [?] around the koi. I really wish I could do a tenth of a percent of what you can do with pastels...
