[Photos] Supernumerary double rainbow.
May. 7th, 2012 07:37 amSo, like, I know they say that double rainbows are rare,
but they don't live in Ellenbrook.
And then they say that supernumerary rainbows are infrequent,
but they don't live in Ellenbrook.
I guess double supernumerary rainbows are just normal here. :)
Guys, it's that time of year again! RAINBOW TIME!
I couldn't fit the whole thing on my blasted camera - but it's a perfect arc.

Contrast upped to show you the supernumerary.

Date: 2012-05-07 12:03 am (UTC)We had a supernumerary one last year that had people stopping in the streets to stare. This one looks every bit as epic!

Date: 2012-05-07 01:23 am (UTC)I didn't know there were actual names for those phenomena, especially the extra bands of color on the main rainbow. I love that. I think part of me assumed that was just normal. (Not htat I see rainbows much in Boston, but they weren't too uncommon when I was a kid, at least when there was rain.)

Date: 2012-05-07 03:17 am (UTC)The photos are beautiful. Thank you for sharing them! We get rainbows here, and a fair number of doubles, but they're rarely complete.

Date: 2012-05-07 03:51 am (UTC)Really?
I'd agree that complete arcs are uncommon, but doubles don't seem to be that unusual to me. (Though I most often notice them when I'm on the freeway, so open-ish horizon might help that...)
Your pics (and the subjects thereof,) are *gorgeous*

Date: 2012-05-07 08:25 am (UTC)Yup, but think about it, Perth people are kind of spoiled geographically. We have the perfect weather for rainbows, especially as there's often so much generous sunlight at interesting angles during light-to-heavy rains. So rare globally doesn't mean rare geographically.

Date: 2012-05-07 08:25 am (UTC)Stupid Ellenbrook with its stupid 'oh look at the radar, it's raining everywhere but in Ellenbrook, Toodyay and Bullsbrook again' microclimate.

Date: 2012-05-07 04:56 pm (UTC)There was a similar rainbow here a couple weeks back. I didn't know what the supernumerary rainbow and Alexander's Band were called, thanks for teaching me something new!
