[Art] Wandsuna - Mr and Mrs Finch.

My first Wandsuna illustration in too long.
My fingers still have pastel dust embedded into them.
I've realised that I've run out of glassine,
so I'm going to need to get down to an art store to make sure that this can be protected
since I only use limited fixative.

MATERIALS: Soft pastels (Schminke / Windsor & Newton), Pastel pencils (Carbothello), Pastel paper (Mi Tientes), Hard pastels (Faber Castell) and limited fixative.






Please forgive the quality of this photo. It's heavily overcast today, and my camera really struggles to capture the colour saturation and details of the Wandsuna series. I really should get a tripod one of these days.

So, so sad...

It is, I think I have a lot of sad things to say with the Wandsuna series at the moment, though this was one of the more obviously anguished, I think.

I find that I have trouble dealing with sadness and heartbreak...

It's so lovely. But also so sad. I like the faint blue aura around the finches and partway up the window - and the way the foxes in the nest also sort of look like flames rising from a pyre.

I'm glad you like the aura! I wasn't going to keep it in at first, but then I decided it did fit after all. :) And I love the comparison of foxes to flames; it was unintentional (I wish I could take credit for that, but all credit goes to you, finding strong narratives in the piece).

I have to be honest - anthropomorphized birds scare me. But I love the colors in this, and it looks so textural, like a satin-stitched tapestry.

For the Birds

I don't know exactly what it is. They discomfit me. Big Bird off Sesame Street was the scariest freaking thing when I was a kid. I don't know if it's a holdover from that or if I had a traumatic experience involving one of my mother's pet birds when I was little or just one of those things.

Many regular ol' birds scare me, especially parrots & their hook-beaked relatives - parakeets, cockatiels, etc. I just expect them to attack me. They're ok far away, but up close & personal, ack! Crows can peck your eyes out but a parrot can cut off your nose or your fingers without even trying - and people trust them up close to their faces & around their hands, whereas if a crow is going for your eyes, there's usually some warning & the possibility of ducking.

It's amazing. I love the faint blue glow surrounding everything, and the simplicity of the background. :)

Oh, this is *gorgeous* on completion! Full of bitter sorrow, of course, but beautiful. I really love the leaves behind the window, and the "light" shining in the window and around the eggs and foxes. So much narrative with this one! There's a whole book in a single piece of art. :)

The leaves behind the window were fun to do, and I knew in the beginning how I wanted to do them, so I'm glad they worked out! :D I do love narrative artwork, I think it may be one of my favourite styles.

Yay natural media! I love digital (though I don't do it myself), but my first love is traditional media, if only for the narcissistic reason that it's what I know. I do love soft pastels. Thank you so much for your comment.
