Oh wow, the red just pops! And the Dire Wolf looks so soft I could reach out and cuddle it - except for its "I do not cuddle" face.

Actually with a 0.1 fineliner, some watercolour pencils, and then with a bit of gray over the top in certain areas blended in to create a velvety texture. That's how. *g*

Yes, the velvety texture, that's what it is (couldn't put my finger on it). It's like that one fox picture you did a while ago, there's just something so strikingly different about it compared to other fur textures you've done in the past.

I tend to do it with all fur these days, but I think here the shading really helped, and that extra buffer of grays over the top. I also used an 'almost broken' 0.1 fineliner which yielded a much lighter fur texture which probably helped.

It was a very amazing energy to work with. It came through so strong and clear! That doesn't often happen with extinct megafauna, so I think Dire Wolf has a very strong voice. Zie must be an amazing totem.

I know others have commented on the fur already, but you really do an excellent job of rendering the different fur textures on the animals you paint, and the thick fluffy coat of this dire wolf is particularly appealing :)

Oh wow! He is so completely fascinating. The intelligence in his eye. The partial snarl on his lips. And I really like the starkness of the colorway here. The red really stands out, such vitality.

The blue-grey metallic-y lined around the dire wolf and the outside of the red rock braid ring? (Wow words, I am good with them.) Anyway, I thought that color was that subtle but oh so perfect last element that really made the piece outstanding, instead of just great.

Ah! It's platinum, but I can see how it could be faintly blue in the scan. It shines very nicely, but it's slightly duller than the silver, so it gives a nice contrast there too. :D

It might just be an optical illusion. Now that I look at it, if the contrast wasn't there, I probably wouldn't even see any blue. Anyway, the contrast really works, I think.

I think also, the red would pick up *any* blue tones, no matter how faint (such as that of a blue-based gray) and make them stand out on initial viewing. I've been looking at this work for so long that I don't see it anymore; but red has that affect on blue tones, and I think that could definitely be another mechanism at work!
