Just went outside. It's even bigger now. Disturbing. DEC has no prescribed burns listed. But FESA has no fire alerts either. The Ellenbrook community is all like; 'uhhhh?'

Nah, turns out it's a prescribed burn after all; DEC was just confusing with how they'd listed it. It's a big prescribed burn though. 50 hectares.

I'm relieved to be late to the party and see that it's a prescribed burn. It's odd how smoke will sometimes do that, isn't it? One contiguous column straight up (presumably from the heat/lack of wind) and then it hits a certain point in the atmosphere and the particles scatter out.

I found that inversion layer really interesting, with the way it was interacting with the smoke. It was quite a still, warm afternoon (I mean it was only a maximum of 26C, but that's hot in a lot of other places). The smoke got much bigger after my final photograph and then was mostly dissipated around the place by the evening when I went on my walk.

It's a big, big prescribed burn. When the freak tornado came through and uprooted hundreds of mature pine trees (or snapped them plain in half like matchsticks, which is quite a sight), it left a lot of drying pine wood filled with pine oil. So they've been trying to deal with that as quickly as possible. The original prescribed burn was 70 hectares in size, so they definitely had a lot to deal with.

Prescribed or not, that's scary as hell on the horizon.

It was pretty impressive. I went to bed and didn't think about it again though, afterwards. You get really used to fires here. Probably a little too used to them. As I fell asleep I remember thinking 'if this was 40,000 years ago, I'd probably be a bit more worried right now instead of thinking 'the firefighters will deal with it if it gets out of hand.'
