Picspam: Hawkin's Park pt I

So Glen and I did end up going to Hawkin's Park in Joondalup today, and mostly just walked around (it's really NICE to be able to walk around).

I snapped some pictures (and some I'm really happy with), and we talked, and sat under the eucalypts and at one point we got a chocolate dipped soft-serve cone, because it was a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon and therefore to picnickers and Mr. Whippy van were out in force.

I took quite a few photos, so I will do a couple (or maybe three) entries to show them. I hope you like. Here is a sample!


Lake Yellagonga with complementary ducks!






Pacific Black Duck... from behind! I love the colours in this one.



The Lake - it's pre-Winter and so you can see a lot more sand bars and such, that said, it's doing better at this time of year than it has been and el Nina is definitely in strong effect. I love love the colours of Australian wetlands.



Galah - I'm particularly happy with this shot.



(feral) Long Billed Corellas - the one in the middle looks like its laughing. HAHA I IZ CORELLA!!!1!!

Those first ducks look to be Grey Teals. I love their laughing call.

Hey, did you notice the Musk Duck that comes almost to the shore at the jetty? Muskies are a deep water species, but this male has realised that if he comes in close he can get a feed. I have a few photos of him floating around.

I'd say it's the lighting (unless it's a hybrid or something), I spotted a few grey teals but didn't get any photos I was much happy with.

No musk duck nearby today, though I've definitely seen it around, and heard it too (they sound so great)! That was going back about 3 years ago though.

And they just fly around wild like that there! That must be amazing. I don't think I could get anything done. I would constantly be going there and thinking ZOMG look at all these awesome birds that are not in cages! Because we don't really have any birds like that in our wild -- for the most part ours aren't as beautiful, I don't think.

Yeah they do just fly around there. They are particularly attracted to Hawkin's park, because over the years people have been throwing seed down for them and some have even become 'tame' enough to land on your hand for a feed.

oh dang! I love all of these (and in part 2), they really are great photographs. And I'd give a number of body parts to be able to watch wild parrots in their natural habitat. We have feral populations in the US, but I've never seen those, either.

The long-billed corellas aren't actually in their natural habitat, they're feral in Perth, unfortunately. It's quite a problem, because they can potentially hybridise with our western corella and threaten that species at the same time.

But as for the other parrots, I love them. Very loud though!!!

When I think of Australia I don't think of wetlands. It looks lovely. As always, thanks for sharing!

All of Perth is built on an extensive network of wetlands, and in fact, if it had been preserved it would have been one of the most extensive in Western Australia (aside from the North wetlands of Kakadu at the top / more tropical end).

So there are wetlands / swamps / etc. everywhere. It's perfect, as my patron goddess is a wetland goddess.

That's really neat! Too bad more of the wetlands weren't preserved. People don't appreciate them enough, but it's such wonderful habitat for wildlife.

Nope. Lol. And if you tried, they can bite straight through your finger. And they can also bite straight through knuckles as well, I think.
