No, the write up isn't done yet. However, at it's basest in the Oracle Deck, box jellyfish means Challenge.

Box Jellyfish

This one is really interesting, color-wise. There's the blues that I expected--but that red in there...it should clash and look terrible, but it really worked here somehow. Is the red for the poison?

*nods*, and that box jellyfish represents warning / challenge.

I designed it so that if it came up in the deck, someone would immediately know that 'something was up,' without having to spend a while contemplating the picture.

The picture was too peaceful otherwise. Lol.

The keywords for box jellyfish (though some might be taken away as I start writing the file) are:

Unexpected danger. Being taken by surprise. Pain. Simplicity. Letting go in order to get what you want. Invisibility. Going with the flow. Betrayal. Being challenged by nature. Challenge. Death. Be careful when traveling. Stay close to home. Take fewer risks.

it looks awesome. how long did it take to draw it? and then color it?

also, you're creating your own tarot deck?

I'm working on an oracle deck (different from tarot, in that it can be any number of cards, and doesn't have a major / minor arcana).

It's the Australian Animal Oracle Deck (aaod for short), and um... I'm just over halfway through (75 cards in all).

The picture took about 4 hours to draw and do the black outline and the swirls, and then realistically it took about 2 1/2 hours to colour. So 6 1/2 hours. But this was stretched over a month, because I've been very burnt out with my art lately. :)

so cool!

what possessed you to do an oracle deck?

Umm, mostly that I love oracle decks!
Heh.

And also because there's nothing like what I have in mind in Australia right now. I think Australia could really do with a good Oracle Deck. I mean it has one or two animal ones now, but... I think mine has a place.

Eeeee jellyfish! They scare me, a whole lot of them stung me on a tide when I was swimming in the sea in Queensland a few years ago.
I meant to ask you, too - do you have any info around on Vilturj glyphs and symbols, apart from the runes? I've seen some interesting symbols in your art before, and as my mind works in symbols, it'd be cool to get some info on those of Vilturj.

I'm not a huge fan of jellyfish either, though we don't have as many of the really toxic ones as they do in Queensland.

Erm... I did a whole bunch of entries on the Vilturj glyphs about a year and a half ago, I'll see if I can dig them up.

But as the for the stuff I use in my artwork, most of those are personal symbols, and not always Vilturj symbols.

That's exactly how I feel when I see jellyfish. Any kind of jellyfish. One (I don't know what kind, I was in Malibu, CA) got swept between my legs one time and I will always remember the pain, even if the scars have faded.

Wow that does sound painful.

I am lucky in that I haven't had too many bad encounters with jellyfish. Most of mine tend to be seeing them on the shore, instead of in the water...

This so striking! I love the big defiant red circle. I also really like how the 'swirlies' clear away at the 'head' of the jellyfish. And the whole composition of the picture adds to the watery flow. Very nice.

I like the red circle too. It's very red! I actually had to de-saturate the red in the scan!!!

I can believe that. It is -extremely- red. Draws your eye right to the GIANT RED CIRCLE in the middle, that almost seems like it's resting just onto of the art, the colour contrast is so strong.

I will be offering prints, just gotta wait for it to be approved... and then I think I need to renew my print account so I can manually lower the prices to what I normally sell at. And then I will let you know. Heh.

Put me down for 1 deck when its completed please *s*

I love your work and this one as all the others, is amazing.

I like the space around his head. Sort of draws your attention to the swirls which I think of as eyes. He looks angry for some reason. I also think he looks like a 'he', sorry.

Love you

Awww thank you.

Gorgeous! I agree with the comments above on the red, and I adore how the jellyfish has an almost... fearsome sort of abstract face that's just fantastic.

Thank you! The picture had to be very abstract really, because well.. it's a transparent creature! Heh. But I did try and still convey a mood that would not necessarily soothe people straight out. I'm glad that you're seeing fearsome or strong aspects in the red / face. It means I've done my job. *hugs*

That would be jellyfish' pleasure! S/he was very pushy about being in the deck. Heh. :D
