How NOT to hire an artist...

Not very smart. He has just ruined his own strategy. Maybe it isn't advice. Maybe it is a confession!

I think it's a confession that illustrates what a lot of people think about artists! :/

So did I. It happens to freelance writers too.

Wow. This guy is serious? Ouch. Though at least he shouts what others keep to themselves; if only they were all that loud so as to be avoided.

This, because it's scary how many people think this way about artists but would never proclaim it in a public place where artists can actually go GTFO.

Whoa. That's just horrendous. I can't believe there are people thanking him for his "good advice!" Birds of a feather, I guess.

Thankfully after like the first three comments, every other comment (and there's like... 95 more now), are calling him out on his latent bullshit.

What a slimy little turd.

I warned my f-list. Hopefully some of the other artists will pick it up and spread the word.

What sickens me the most is how many people think this way; the only unusual thing this douche has done is actually come out and say it publicly in a blog like it's okay to deceive and obfuscate the client. :/

But I've seen enough people agreeing with Kailot's post on other pages where people are spreading the word...and have experienced enough of the attitude myself, to know that people like this just aren't uncommon enough, sadly.

Seriously. And I'm already hugely pissed off as in the past few days I've been told I'm a bad angry feminist and that I'm a "racist who hates americans" because I posted an article about how America is not the centre of the universe and other cultures matter.

The mainsplaining idiocy is RIFE this week. I'm tempted to cull some of the f-list.

You know what's funny? I've believed that most of my life. And I AM an American. So I guess I'm a 'racist who hates Americans', too. And kinda proud of it...

Yeah isn't it funny that if you criticize America you are "racist" (despite the glaring fact that American is not a race but a nationality) but if America criticizes the rest of the world's cultures nobody bats an eye!

Why do I feel like saying "This is the outdated imperialist doctrine that is exploiting the workers or our society"? Its not a joke though, this guy was being completely serious about exploiting people, especially venerable people. I know a lot of people on Devientart who take serious time, I mean like serious amounts of time to produce stuff that is like "woowwww" and you sit there going "woooo" for ages and so on and then you get people like this that then go and offer these people who often have no idea what a pro artist rate actually is! The way he says "Make sure you don't let them take a rate" like "make sure you can exploit the art to the maximum, this way you rub it in there faces the fact the product/icon/etc they did is now nationally known and no one, no one knows who did it, or the fact they got paid $500 for what is a million dollar icon." I mean really. People like this make my fists itch, my head ache, and my nose bleed.

Holy crap, what a complete ass. If I knew which game it was this moron was promoting, I'd start the boycott now.

At least most ethical, experienced people know when dealing with one-off commissions (be it artistic or otherwise) that it's usually half up front, the other half upon completion.

But complete graphics for game development? C'mon, get real.

Wow... how perfectly, moronically asinine.

It's bad enough that people actually think that way in general, but to then shoot yourself in the foot by giving bad advice to other developers so that the continuing cycle of artist abuse can continue? That's even more debasing.

I cannot honestly believe that this person calls himself a professional in his field. Granted, I highly doubt he'll have much work in said field much longer as it seems that people in the art community are (justly) up in arms about said disgusting piece of trash.

What is fairly amusing to me in a seriously omgwtfbbq sort of way is the fact that after being called on the fact that said supposed professional is being a slimeball and demeaning artists everywhere, professional and "hobbyist" alike, he then tries to defend himself by saying that far be it from him to truly apologize as he appreciates capitalism- anyone who doesn't like that fact can sod off, apparently.

Honestly, it's people like this who make me seriously rethink my idea of starting to put some of my photography and artwork on dA up for sale...

Do you know much about the history/exploitation of indigenous Australian artists? I don't know hugely big stuff about it but this article seems to be written by the same kinda people who are involved in that rip-off too.

I rather liked the guy who was saying the govt will be after them soon for breaking the minimum wage laws etc

... But artists don't actually do anything that's worth *paying* them for, do they?

You know I don't believe that in the slightest, I believe an artist deserves to be paid fairly for the work the produce, but I'm distilling down what I've read. All that talk of "market forces" boils down to "I'll pay you what I see fit, when I see fit, and you'll *like* it!". It's a bad case of "no one's work is as important as mine". Sadly it's not just artists who are victimized by this nonsense, but it's probably most clearly visible in that area. Personally I think the author of that screed needs a quick lesson in market forces where people refuse to work for him or hire him due to his lack of ability to deal with other people with professional courtesy and respect.

Personally I'd love to see this fellow try this tactic with his mechanic or plumber or doctor. Somehow I think he'd find that they'd tell him to do it himself if he's so adept at judging their professions.

I'm obviously not an artist, but I actually get this attitude from the public all the time myself. Everyone knows I'm an idiot Doing It Wrong and they could do my job much, much better themselves. My typical response is to hear them out politely, explain the logic for why X is done the way it is, and then excuse myself and walk away before they can argue about it. The difference there is I don't have to listen to them to get work, nor do they determine my pay. :P The last time I had that, a fellow started with "I'm from X" (this is a common attitude from people from X, I don't hear it from people from elsewhere) "and X is so much *better* than [where we are]." Then he proceeds to tell me about what they do there (which I understand better than he does) and how we should just do Y and Z, and implies that I'm not very good at my job... and then he asks me if our organization is hiring because his girlfriend is interested in that type of work and is looking for a job. He *himself* is only [where we are] because there are more jobs here than X. It was kind of funny, because he didn't realize how thoroughly he had positioned himself to poison my response. Not that it mattered because we really aren't hiring, but the entitlement displayed is astonishing.

Of course, he also doesn't realize that not only is he impugning your workplace, he's also impugning his girlfriend: "This place isn't good enough for ME as I aspire to better things someday, but can she work here too?"

I'd say if you ever want suitable revenge, send his girlfriend a note with this comment of yours in it.

Oh my. It's the douchepocalypse.

This is the reason why we have 'starving artists'. Because douches like these take advantage and seriously, seriously devalue the very artists they hire to make their games/marketing/whatever great.

That blog/article is sickening, but I tell you....that it does serve at least two purposes:

1) It will keep this guy from hiring artists very easily.

2) It clearly outlines a predatory attitude that some (not all) people have about hiring artists, or even buying art in general....and the people who think this way secretly (and don't broadcast it like the idiot who wrote the article), can cringe.

They can cringe, hopefully feel ashamed, and can change their attitudes for the future (okay...so now I'm just openly hoping lol).
