Gretel

A portrait of Gretel from 'Hansel and Gretel,' showing her post fairytale, with the goose that helped them across the lake, the pearls she stole from the witch, the tear showing where she started and the flames showing where she finished.

Gretel is one of my favourite fairytale characters. She started out weak and tearful, and ended up strong and compassionate.

Burn the Witch!

Even though this is Gretel after her encounter with the witch... I still have to say, if I had been that witch, I would have turned her & Hansel away. I might not even have opened my door, just looked out the peep-hole until I saw her heels in the distance.

You know what's weird? The drawing process seems the same way!

She looked really sad and weak in the sketch and lineart pictures, but now she looks stronger with the colors.

I like how "real" this feels too, like she's a real person in contrast to your previous human (or human-like) images.

Awesomeness <3

I really like the "corona of light" effect you have created on the shading of the spirals behind the fire energy radiating from Gretel.

Wooooww... I love the subtleties in the shading in this one.. the contrast between the muted colors and the bright is just perfect.. loving the background, and her sleeves, and, the broom, and.. well. everything. It's very well balanced and insanely detailed.

Her expression is a complex mix of determination, strength, and sorrow.. and something else that i can't quite place.

That's a lot of detail, and such a big piece, too. <3

Wow, I want to give her a hug, but I'm afraid she'd bite me. ;)

This is amazing! *dies* You probably didn't know this but Hansel & Gretel was one of my favorite fairy tales from when I was a kid. (I spent the first 6 years of my life across the street from a cottage that looked like a bonafide gingerbread house which an old woman lived in, too.) My favorite favorite is The Wild Swans. Well anyway... this is a great piece of work!

I looove the subtle almost pearlescent colors overtop the spirals, and the blue watery stuff at the bottom of the background. And all the little details of her dress/apron/thing and the beads and the halo. This is gorgeous.

I can't help thinking, the colours in the dress and the detail on the shoulder straps are very appropriate for the part of the world where the story comes from. I can almost see a little village.

I still love to see your work improve, and the ways in which it improves. You've gotten all the more skilled at drawing people, especially at drawing subtleties of emotions. Nice work :).

And definitely big compared to what I'm used to working on in this style. I definitely have to work in this size again. It's less forgiving, but... I can do so much more with it.

She reminded me of the Goose Girl, but the other elements quickly distanced her from that character. The broom and pearls brought out domesticity and wisdom while the corona definitely accents that the girl has come into her own power. This is a beautiful piece, well done!
