As it's going through a dust storm rather unlike any other

Australia is seriously just one of the most awesome places in the whole world.

Feeling very bad for the asthmatics in Sydney though. Take care of yourselves!

Are you telling me your whole landscape is actually reddish orange like that? O.o Wow.

Aside from dust, what causes it and particularly, the fact that it's red? We have the immersion here in Salt Lake, but it's white/grey haze; I'm yet to see any Martian haze here. :(

Well not here in Western Australia, but Sydney? Yup.

As for the red dust, it's because of red sand and soil, we have a lot of that here.

We have red clay here in NC - I guess if it were picked up in a 'sandstorm' kind of thing, we'd get the same haze, but it's clay, not dirt, so I think that's difficult to do.

What gets me is that people are OUT in this...dude, particulate in lungs is UNCOMFORTABLE!

Cool images though.

Got a friend who is over there on holidays and visiting family and friends at the moment... waiting to hear how she's doing with it and when she is meant to be flying back

You kind of adapt to it. If it were where I am, I'd be wearing a dust mask and snorting saline nasal spray, but that's because not doing so would cause me to end up with a sinus infection (smoke does the same - spending time with smokers or nearby bushfires is a known hazard for me). Driving conditions are as for fog.

Are these dust storms very dangerous? I'm sure they can be. :O

We've got it here in Brissy as well, just not as bad. Did the run around closing all the windows cause the whole house smells of dirt now. I put a link to some pics I took in my journal.

Reminds me of the Ash Wednesday fires in 83, when Melbourne was swamped in red dust storms.

1. Beautiful.
2. Wow, I would so have bronchitis right now if I was living there. Although it might be worth it to see something like that.

The landscape around Sydney isn't that colour, further west past the mountains is though and that is where the dust is from, it certainly wasn't a pleasant way to spend the morning...

On Triple J this morning with the red haze and the earthquakes and the equinox, they were saying it was the end of the world.

Then someone called up and said she was driving along when she thought it was raining. Then she realised it wasn't rain covering the car, but grasshoppers or something. The presenter was just like, "Locusts! It is the end of the world!"

The pictures above are way cool though. I was wondering what it must look like. Thanks for posting them!

^_^

Nope. For some people who live there, not ever; and not to this severity.
