Nerthus

A goddess who is often forgotten, and who shouldn't be. Who is perhaps best known for representing valour, holiness and fertility. Shown veiled or masked. And also represented by boars, birch forests, swamps and wetlands among other things.

I'm not actually a practitioner of Northern traditions, but I do know a lot of people who are, and some of them are champs are absolute champs. :)

This is the cover art for a devotional being written by [livejournal.com profile] nicanthiel, for the goddess Nerthus. The book will be titled Boar, Birch and Bog: Prayers to Nerthus, from Gullinbursti Press.

Nicanthiel's website, and information on the book, can be found here.

I really like that even thought you've used cool colours, this picture has a lot of warmth in it.

I love love love the fabric draped over her, and the way the end of the spirals creates a glow around her.

I just realised that in my two covers, I have a boar coming out of the side of the picture! Hee.

Nicely done!

I am VERY PROUD to have this masterpiece gracing the covers of one of the books on my press. Both you and [livejournal.com profile] nicanthiel are awesome, and champs of champs yourselves ;)

Ooooo! Smashing. I really do like this one, it sort of reminds me of the masked spirits out of the movie Spirited Away (which makes me starving, as a side-note) and the forest in there makes the whole thing look very ethereal. Good stuff.

This is really breathtaking. I may need to see if you're available to do cover art for my next Woden book, when the time comes--if you're willing, that is.

Wow, amazing. Really captures Her. What a fantastic book cover that will be!

If I ever, ever get around to writing the book I've been pondering for a decade or so, I may have to talk to you about a commission for the cover. :)

I love the feel of a picture just reaching out and grabbing my heart like that...

I love this image...I'm going to have to look into this spirit some more. It doesn't help the fact that I love and live in wetland areas.

And the mask bit is also pretty neat. Thanks for introducing this spirit to us.

Thanks! It does have some warm colours in it, particularly a little bit of brown in the boar and the background. But it is mostly unified with one of the 'warm blues,' hoorah for warm blues. :)

*nods* Maybe, I tend to go through real phases, and it depends on the god too. For some reason I clash more with male gods than female, but I've worked with Odin before, briefly, so who knows. :D

Thank you, and I love wetland areas too. I think I'd draw almost any deity if they were connected to wetlands / bogs / swamps.

Well I've had the idea that long - it's for the "Girls Underground" archetype that I've been researching and formulating: http://www.winterscapes.com/underground/. I finally figured out how I would make it into a book, but still haven't had the time and drive to start. Too many damn projects, that's the problem.

Yea, it's a shame many people see wetlands as "dirty, dead" places. That couldn't be farther from the truth.
