These guys are SO gorgeous. They are an Australian beetle, that come into their absolutely stunning breeding colours in December, hence then name 'Christmas beetle.' There is actually a crap-load of red and gold iridescent paint on the beetle which you can only see in certain lights (and didn't scan at all).

Ooh, you know what would go really nicely with this one? Those big moths with the circles on the wings. They tend to show up a lot around Christmas and my mum used to tell me they were Santa's fairy's keeping an eye on me. I wish I knew what their proper name was.

This reminds me of my entomology class in university. If I didn't know what an insect was, 'It's a beetle!' was usually a safe bet. (Though knowing it was from the beetle family wasn't enough for a correct answer, I tended to write it on my tests anyway because I hate blank spaces. ;) )
