I tend to use all the ones that fall, regardless of how they land. The positions as such tinge the importance and nature of the rune in question, certainly, but I feel that they were chosen for a reason (I pull 9 runes and cast, only rarely doing the full 24).
But very interesting nonetheless. And your point on casting distance is certainly very important :P
