Yeah, it says so in the first photo title. :)

We have hardly any rough collies here, by comparison. It's interesting what parts of the world tend to focus or get captivated by what dogs.

They trim the fur, but I think sometimes they do have problems seeing things! If they don't get trimmed enough, they can't see properly. But most people who get these dogs look after them really well! :) So they can see just fine.

urm when I was a kid my neighbours had two old english sheepdogs, when they were due for a clip they used to run into things! they are clumsy anyway and when their hair is long, it's like an emo kid trying to negotiate a glass sliding door!

I used to look after them when they went on holidays. They were gorgeous.

Wait - the first one is a rough collie? It really looks like an Australian Shepard to me. :(

No, it's a rough collie. A blue merle Australian shepherd looks like this: http://www.ploensaussies.com/images/aussies/shootersm.jpg

The face shape is different. :)

Ranger is a handsome lad, questionable toilet habits aside! :D I like the sable collie a good deal as well, and the OES made me laugh. I'm always mystified about how they're actually meant to tend sheep if they presumably can't *see* the flock...

thank you for the puppy pictures! (i know. but they're all puppies to me. *G*)

they cheered me as i was being all heart-hurt because i go to my mama's house tomorrow (shrimp gumbo for my b-day!) and their Big Dog isnt there any longer. his heart gave out after too much heat. he was 8, and a great pyranese mountain dog. just an adorable huge fluffer-puppy and its going to be all weird without him drooling on my knees. there isnt anything as sweet (and gross) about a dog who gives the "pet me" eyes while he drools on you.

Rough collies are so awesome - I think they have to be some of the most handsome of dogs!
I grew up with a sheltie - they are fantastic dogs but OY the barking! I don't think I'll likely be in a place where I can ever take on a rough collie, but they are definitely up there on my 'top breeds' list. :)

It's weird how many pure breed dogs we have here. I've never seen so many in my life! I don't really understand it, considering how expensive pure bred dogs tend to be but I think this area is more economically affluent than other places I've been. Hm....

Ranger is very handsome, although they were all pretty / handsome, depending on what gender they were. There weren't many there either, maybe ten in total at the show? And there were even less smooth collies, only about three. Two blue merles and one sable.

I was just shocked at how big the OES was! It was huuuuuuge!

They were all pretty cool!

Except the chihuahuas, which I've always hated.

I like rough collies. There were none who barked, except one who was watching two dogs playing happily literally a few feet away from it. And I thought 'yeah, I'd bark in frustration too if people were playing all around me and I couldn't play!' But he stopped when someone said 'stop,' so... yeah.

I don't know if I'd get a sheltie, too small for me, and also I've heard lots of issues with barking too.

It's funny you say that, because this one was spread out over a large oval and was extremely quiet. No people talking through microphones or loudspeakers, had the atmosphere of a picnic, and very very few dogs barking.

It was actually... remarkably quiet, which was bizarre.

Well, now that you mention it... I suppose the trainers would have to make sure that their dogs are quiet and well-trained. Yippy dogs just wouldn't win the show.

Old English Sheepdogs aren't small to begin with, given that they can weigh up to 45 kg or so, and then when you add in all that fur you quickly end up with something like a small ambulatory haystack. :D

Did any other breeds catch your eye, or were you mostly happy hanging around with the herding folk?

It was only herding/working dogs (but not gundogs), terriers and toys that day. I pretty much dislike all toy dogs. And out of the terriers, I liked the look of the airedales (which is I think what I meant when I wrote 'what do you think of schnauzers' and I think I meant airedales, since I've always liked the look of them), but I was never close enough to see what they were like.

But otherwise, I really like a lot of the herding dogs, aside from kelpies and ACDs and Australian shepherds. *blush*

You're entitled to your likes and dislikes. :) (I would upset some people greatly if I said in their presence that I don't like Shar-Peis, but it's the simple truth. I've only been exposed to the undesirable side of the breed, and never saw any character or sweetness to balance it. In contrast I'm less hard on the Chow Chow (which was an equally difficult breed to deal with at the clinic), but there I saw signs of brains and personality in some individuals while they were being fractious and difficult even to their owners. The fact remains I don't care for either breed. *shrugs*)

Airedales are amongst my favorites of the terriers. They tend to have tremendous personalities, and they're much "easier" than other terriers in interaction provided their needs for physical and mental stimulation are met (the breeders like to use "rambunctious" as a breed descriptor, and it's an understatement). I'd be a little cautious in who I'd recommend the breed to, because they do need considerable exercise and stimulation, and the individual has to be a firm, decisive sort (or else the terriers will be terrors), but it's a grand breed. For you I'd still recommend the Bouvier over the Airedale, but Airedales are very nice. (Incidentally, I refreshed my memory about Bouvier characteristics just to be sure I wasn't out of date or mistaken in saying they might be a good choice for you, and on a couple of pages about the breed they discuss how their coat makes them more hypoallergenic than many. Not completely hypoallergenic, of course, but then there's no such thing, not even poodles. I thought this was useful information to pass along.)

Is that last one an Old English Shepherd? One of the best dogs I've ever known/had was. I remember disliking her at first because she was replacing my old dog (my parents gave her away while I was at school) but she was so awesome, she really was my best friend in a short amount of time.
