Some of that might be conflation due to the opening up of Dreamwidth accounts (the no-invite-code-needed thing), so a lot of it might be people making secondary accounts, RP accounts, etc... But even with that in mind it's still a huge jump!

OK, I have started into the waters of the links you've given me, and now I'm curious - do you think it's the changes that have upset every one or the twitter discussion lack of respect?

The changes. Most people don't know about this arrogance happening behind the scenes and aren't seeing it. Most people ARE seeing the changes (especially in the S1 skins, it hasn't rolled over to the S2 skins, so I've only seen screencaps).

I mean the lack of respect doesn't help, but if that would create a mass exodus, it would have years ago. Some LJ staff are wonderful. Some are really not. And that's been true (and documented) for years.

It's amazing -- there are as many new journals in these last two days as there were over the entire Twit-Face debacle. Of course it remains to be seen if those journals are active and/or the people making them remain or go back to LJ (or go somewhere else entirely), but it's still quite the show.

If they roll back the changes, I think most will 'exodus' back again, which is understandable. But Livejournal is giving all indications that they have no interest in rolling anything back, to the dismay of both Russians and non-Russians, so... maybe? At any rate, even if they do roll it back, LJ will do something else to screw over their users in approximately three months, I'm sure.

I'm pretty outraged over being involuntarily switched back to 'automated payments' despite never actually using automated payments on my account. Thankfully the CC info was old.

Ah, you're the first person I actually know who had the autopayment thing happen, so now I can completely credit it. Not that I thought that people were lying before, but I thought perhaps there was misunderstanding, and then ballooned because people are generally pretty angry at LJ right now. But if you've had it happen, and when you never used autopay, then obviously it's not a mistake.

As for the "change in three months" have you seen the planned site redesign? I don't have a link handy, it's buried somewhere in the depths of the News!Rage, but it makes LJ look very much like another platform, name starts with Face... :D They're really trying to be "hip" by aping Facebook, and possibly driving away their core userbase (who use Livejournal to interact and communicate much more than FB's "Wall" commenting system allows). I think I'll deliberately try to cut back on my community reading over on LJ, so I won't miss them if they go away.

Yeah, I went over to check when another person here was like 'maybe you should go check!' to LJ users. One of my accounts hadn't, but another had. I've never allowed automated payments to LJ, so that was a bit of a shock!

Heh. I've been reading the link to igrick's journal. I can read a bit of Russian, and generally there's a lot of criticism. Part way down, however, is a *gem*. Some English speaking users have been complaining about the redesign, and that maybe the Russian beta testers liked it, but not everyone, so maybe there need to be options for commenting when a Russian speaks up and translates that so far as he knows there were no Russian bloggers in the test group, and that of the reviews, most were overwhelmingly negative. Then he quotes in translation (so excuse the language please):

"fucking faggots, turn it back to the initial state and never ever touch again!"

For himself he says:

What happens is not a conflict "russian-speaking bloggers against english-speaking bloggers". It is SUP (LJ administration), that is against all bloggers, regardles of their native language.

All of this picking at Russian has had an interesting effect on my brain. I had a short nap this afternoon because I'm still thoroughly exhausted, and in my dreams there were groups of people standing around in my house, all muttering quietly in Russian. :D

And, yeah, Igrick's journal is... icky. I'm glad he's got nothing to do with the running of Dreamwidth! It's saddening though that the changes are upsetting a lot of people, and nothing will likely be done. They really just want a new Facebook, or Tumblr, or whatever. But honestly, that's what Facebook and Tumblr are for.

Sadly, it hasn't even been three months this time. That "people being able to see other users' private info" thing was only in October. LJ seems to be screwing up more and more frequently.

Whoa! I've heard that DW is getting closer to the ability to import entire communities from LJ in addition to personal journals, too. It makes me wonder if there will be an additional spike, since I know some fandom coms remain on LJ just because they can't move all their content elsewhere.

Also, I'm looking over the raw data stats right now, and it's slightly fascinating to see spikes happen again and again over the years. Drives the point home how many times LJ has fucked over its user base. :/

Well, if they're having issues like me, they've likely got no other option. My non loading issue? yeah, not going away. I have had occasional blips of access - enough to post a few comments - but I just can't load LJ at all 95% of the time.

A site that has access and maybe 10% of your friends is better than one that has all of them but refuses to load.

I'm sorry to hear that. Also, you asked me last night (last night for me, anyway, heh), but it's been loading okay for me. I've heard different servers have different problems though. :/

In my case, it was the lack of respect that finally pushed me over completely. Usability issues always get worked around eventually, but the guy in charge of all this has been openly mocking the people who have complained, and on public forums. It's that utter lack of professionalism that finally infuriated me enough to override all the last reasons I had to stay.

That is pretty darned impressive. However, given LJ staff's attitude about the whole fiasco, none of it is surprising. They are being indignant and unresponsive to the customer base. And as soon as Dreamwidth allows porting for communities, it is going to get even worse. I have no fewer than six that I am packing up and sending over here. One is slowly in progress, post by post.

In either case, LJ loses.

I'm too lazy to do this work myself, but I am curious how the recent exodus compares to others.

At the moment, I've left commenting enabled on my xposts to LJ, but I'm seriously debating whether to leave them that way. The news posts have been addressing some of the usability problems with the new system, but have said NOTHING about fixing the problem with the new color scheme giving people headaches, migraines, and other seizure fun. And that's a level of awful that goes way beyond any other fuckup.
