[Art] Northern Harrier Hawk as Totem

[livejournal.com profile] ariestess do you want to email me at ophelias.diary@gmail.com to yay or nay this piece? :)

Northern Harrier (Hawk) as Totem

Also known as the hen harrier, marsh hawk and harrier hawk (although true harrier hawks are found in Africa and Madagascar). They are commonly found in rural areas, wetlands and swamps. In the UK they are hunted as a pest (because they hunt game birds too, oh no! Silly humans), resulting in regional extinctions, and there are - approxinately 10-20 breeding pairs left. To read more about the Northern harrier's persecution, go here:

That is probably the most realistic looking hawk you've done yet. Bravo! I simply love it.

[identity profile] darakat-ewr.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
You seem to have done the feathers in a different way this time, is there any reason for that?

[identity profile] jet-ski.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
surely there are enough pigeons for all! the english should come here and shoot them for us :P

[identity profile] moonvoice.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
They look awesome, I love that little disc of feathers they have around their face.

[identity profile] moonvoice.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
*bounces* :)

[identity profile] moonvoice.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much. :D

[identity profile] moonvoice.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Wow thank you! That's high praise. *does a little dance*

[identity profile] moonvoice.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Their plumage is so so so mottled and I wanted to try a new way of conveying that. It wasn't that time-effective though. Basically fineliner, watercolour pencil, pencil, blending, pencil, blending, washes of acrylic, acrylic highlights...

Heh.

[identity profile] moonvoice.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, I like pigeons too...

[identity profile] silere.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
This is my favorite of your raptors so far! The face is incredible, and i love the dotted white arc of feathers. Also love how you handled the mottled body feathers. <3

~dances~ :)

[identity profile] jet-ski.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
heh, really? I mean they are kinda cute but there are too many of them. :P

[identity profile] moonvoice.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
There are a lot, but the 'too many of them' is very reflective on there being 'too many of us,' and as I don't hate humans, I don't hate pigeons. I kinda like them. They're just exploiting the suburbs in the same way that we do.

Definitely some amazing realism and an eye-catching piece overall! Nicely done.

This is absolutely amazing, [livejournal.com profile] moonvoice! [livejournal.com profile] shatterpath and I are thrilled with this, and we know [livejournal.com profile] amyrayh will be when we give her the original...

Sending an email in just a few with my yay!

You know, I kind of want to reach out and touch this guy.

I'm still debating showing [livejournal.com profile] amyrayh the drawing before the original gets here or not. She knows she's getting it, but that's it...

Hmm...

I saw this last night! Yay!!!

I love the colours and the linework.

^_^

**VERY NICE** We have a pair of marsh hawks here at the marina--I love to watch them hunt.

[identity profile] end-of-the-mind.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, man! We have those everywhere right now. Such a handsome little female you've got there! And you certainly pegged her attitude. They're not quite as bad as kestrels or ferruginous hawks, but they're still VERY much large and in charge, and her eyes say it all.

Awesome work, as always :)

[identity profile] jet-ski.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda hate humans.

Raptorlicious

[identity profile] perzephone.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's just gorgeous. Your feathers get softer & more alive on each bird you do. If I was your agent I would so pimp you out making bird-watching field guides.

[identity profile] storm-seeker.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, he's very beautiful and realistic! This is definitely one of my favs! Awesome work. :D

[identity profile] deathofone.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I love the look of the feathers, particularly on the chest. :)

The original arrived in the mail today. It is absolutely, stunningly gorgeous! Thank you SO much!

[identity profile] moonvoice.livejournal.com 2009-03-28 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Hoorah!!!! :D I'm so glad it arrived safe and sound (they always do, but I never fail to be glad), woot!

And the colors work well with [livejournal.com profile] amyrayh's bedroom scheme, something I hadn't noticed before... So double bonus!
