Picspam: Hawkin's Park - May - Pt 1

What is it with ravens eluding my damned camera! I hear them, I see them, I see amazing shots to take of them, but when it comes to pointing and clicking, where are they???

You'll have to content yourself with these instead.

Rainbow Lorikeets - well, they may be a pest, but they look damned good. Loud bastards though.

This little guy below was with a partner who would hop back every now and then. The partner spent most of its time hollowing out, or increasing the hollow in a branch, while he kept watch. They kept calling to each other and it was really quite cute.

We look the same!

One of my faves...

Silver Gull

Streeeeeeeetch

Welcome Swallow

Very nice shots! I recently saw a PBS Nature documentary called the Parrots of OZ which was wonderful. I learned more than ever about the Parrot Clan, who I admit I haven't really thought much on. My fave had to be the species whose males use drumsticks to attract mates to the nests they've selected.

yeah that's a black cockatoo species, aren't they awesome? so black cockatoo covers 'drumming' in the deck, of course, because i can't think of many other animals that actively drum in order to attract a mate. lol. or any, for that matter. *grin*

beautiful pics! That swallow has amazing wings!!

That is one of my favorite documentaries. :D So awesome

Gods I hate lorries. And yet I loves them. They are so beautiful but such loud pain in the ass bastards to handle! And rainbow lorries are the worst of the lot. *rolls her eyes* They're a pest here too really, though a native one *Sighs*

"because i can't think of many other animals that actively drum in order to attract a mate."

You really do have a wonderful eye for photography :)

*gasps and takes it all in with awe*

Oh, they are just magnificent, thank you so much for sharing! One of these days I simply must get to Australia. I would love to see those colorful birds in the wild as much as I'm hoping to someday see elephants in the wild.

Oooh all the wonderful birdies!!!

Good advice: Image

I <3 screamikeets! But wow, what attitude they have!

[identity profile] sunvenus.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
They really are pugnacious little devils, aren't they? I've had several in rehab for quite a while now and they still screech at me and try to bite at every opportunity even though I feed them and care for them singlehandedly... and they know I feed them. They recognise me, yet still act like twits. The little snots. :-)

The scaly-breasted are slightly nicer; a tad less screaming and they will make nice when they see the sweety lori wet drink coming. And musks are nearly tame in comparision!

[identity profile] x-raeya-x.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes musks are much nicer! We only tend to see musks or rainbows here, and I just hate handling the buggers. They always screech and twist and bite and lay on their back so you can't grab them... too smart for their own good! lol.

Like little rainbows landing on branches!
Lovely photos.

Those rainbow lorikeets are stunning.

You manage to get such splendid shots of birds - I don't know how you do it, but I salute your skill! *grin*

These are beautiful. I love glimpses into your world.

I love the pretty colorful Lorikeets, although it's a shame Australia has so many pests.

It is so weird to see candid home shots taken in places where parrots fly around in flocks. To me, parrots are animals that live in cages at peoples houses or the pet store. Your photos always feel surreal to me!

I saw a wallaby for the first time last week. This lady looked like she was pregnant and wearing overalls. But then her belly started to move. And then a baby kangaroo stuck its head out of the top pocket! It was so cool. I wonder what it is like to see them jumping around outside somewhat normally.

Also, how big are kangaroos?

Sorry, these are total newb questions, but I am so fascinated by these pictures that I had to put out my ignorance and ask about the bushlands.

[identity profile] lupabitch.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
At least your pests are colorful! we have starlings, which aren't quite so impressively colored.

[identity profile] earthguardian.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
they kinda look like parrots, the Rainbow Lorikeets.

:3

[identity profile] makhsihed.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
But at least the starlings have the pretty iridescence! That's... sort of color, right? ;)

[identity profile] moonvoice.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
depends on the type of kangaroo. red kangaroos are the biggest (and the largest mammal / surviving marsupial in australia), males can grow up to 1.8 metres (5'9 feet tall).

[identity profile] moonvoice.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
rainbow lorikeets are a kind of parrot. :)

[identity profile] fevas.livejournal.com 2008-05-11 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Wow wish I saw as many different birds when I go out and about!
