That is a very helpful comparison, and really puts the magnitude of the flooding into perspective. What is the population base there like -- I can see that there are numerous towns/cities myself, but that doesn't address the smaller centers. The irony is that (like Australia) we could have flooding of that scope here and if it was placed right it wouldn't affect more than a few hundred people (damage to the land aside). The placement is critical, though, because if it was in a densely developed area that would be disastrous as well.
"At least 31 towns and over 200,000 people have been affected.[2] Damage initially was estimated at around A$1bn (£633m).[3] The estimate of damage and lost revenue is about A$13 billion.[4]
Three-quarters of the state of Queensland has been declared a disaster zone.[5]"

But it's going to get worse overnight, because we've got King Tides coming in, and more flooding.
Heh. Sorry, I should have thought to look myself instead of just asking. It's early morning here and I'm only partly awake in spite of having walked the dog in fairly chilly temperatures. I *need* more coffee, and also to get moving if I'm going to get to work on time. Thank you for the update. Those numbers are appalling. :( Hopefully the death toll goes no higher!
The imagery coming out of this is incredible. I just can't imagine. I've dealt with hurricanes, tornadoes, and snow/ice. Not much flooding, though there's been some over the years - not anywhere near this scale though.
I wish I had money to donate. All I can do is pray.
