[sticky entry] Sticky: Hello, welcome to my journal. Want to know a bit more?

1. I am happy for people to subscribe, especially for artwork and stuff. All other content these days goes under filter. You're welcome to join! If you grant access and I like the cut of your jib, chances are I'll grant access too. :)

2. I feel strongly about trigger warnings and cutting things for sensitive content. I will try and catch a lot of things here under cuts (or filters). I have endeavoured to make this a safe space. However this is first and foremost a safe space for me, which means sometimes I am posting when I'm not in the right frame of mind to trigger warn or place things under cuts.

8 things you should know about me if you are considering reading/adding this journal. )

[Art] Thylacine / Tasmanian tiger ballpoint pen sketch.

Working with Kilometrico black.
(A super stubborn one actually omg. So unpredictable.)
Inside an unlined Paperblanks Ultra.
And mostly, in honour of the scientific expedition
to the Cape York Peninsula
due to credible sightings.

It turns out I love that term.
'Credible sightings.'

[Photos] Clouds singing in the summer air.

So we've had fairly miserable weather here lately. And by miserable I mean hot and muggy. (I know it's cold in most other places in the world, but here you could - literally - cook eggs on the road if the air wasn't so wet).

But wet hot air makes for wonderful cloudscapes, and a lot of the time, very beautiful sunsets.

And so here we are. :)

[Photos] Hillarys in the Summer Interstitial

So while the Eastern States has been sweltering,
Perth has been having its coldest and wettest February day/s on record.
We've been having an extremely aberrant summer.

Which is lovely, except for my chronic illnesses, which don't find it so lovely.

But today was a rarity. Going to Hillarys on a Saturday afternoon to watch the sunset and grab some gelato, and it wasn't absolutely packed to the gills. What a lovely day though:

[Art] Gillaroo (Salmo stomachicus).

So on a whim, during Inktober 2016, I decided to take on some fish. They're an unfamiliar subject matter for me (I think I've done like...maybe 2 or 3 bony fish as totems? Maybe?)

Illustrated in ink on illustration board, and coloured in watercolours, which are a medium I've been trying out a bit lately and am still getting the hang of.

Anyway:

[Photos] A golden evening.

At a time when things are more chaotic and awful than ever,
when there is so much to be mad at, outraged at, horrified at, grief-struck at,
I need these things more than ever.

I need to look at the sky for 20 minutes and marvel at the clouds.
I need to touch the leaves of the Corymbia ficifolia in my garden and whisper soothing words to its tired branches.
I need the hardiness of my Acacias and Grevilleas, and the song of the winds around me.

[Photos] From heat wave to tropical storms...

So we've just come to the end of a fairly intense heatwave.
In Ellenbrook, because we don't get the seabreeze, and heat swelters against the Darling Scarp, it's always about 2-4C more than it is in the Perth metro area.
So we've mostly been dealing with average temps of 41C for four days in a row. (A range of about 105-110F for USians).
Complete with high humidity.
Last night, the weather broke down as a degrading tropical cyclone system approached.
And now today, we have rain.

But here were the clouds from last night's sunset, which was glorious.

[Art] Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella)

This was part of Inktober 2016 (specifically day 8).

Now watercoloured and accented in metallic acrylic / gel pen.

In other news, it's been horridly hot today.
I don't wish Australian summers on anyone.

[Art] A Corvid's Growth

Ballpoint pen on acid-free sustainable forest paper (courtesy of Paperblanks).
This corvid has already been spoken for,
and couldn't be going to a more awesome person.
It actually started out as a doodle,
and I didn't expect anything to come of it at all.

But it's left me thinking I should sketch/illustrate in cheapie ballpoint more often...

[Art] Great Skua, Barred Owl and Roe Deer

The Barred Owl is unavailable for sale, and oh, her feathers were an interesting journey, heh.

These were all a great deal of fun to illustrate. Great Skua had one of the harder energies I've worked with for a while, but I'm not entirely surprised given what a canny predator they are.

Roe Deer was not as 'soft' (not really at all soft) compared to White-Tailed Deer (who I've illustrated twice). Obviously everyone's mileage with totems on a personal level varies, but that's my read on things.

[Art] Grey Seal, Common Dormouse and Wild Boar

I enjoyed colouring these a great deal, even though seal did its best to thwart me a couple of times (and I still can't get the flat scan to capture the gradations of colour properly, you'll need to look at the photo for that).

I didn't expect to end up loving the Dormouse as much as I do. :)

[Art] Bilberry Goat, Atlantic Puffin, Striped Skunk.

I thought I'd be rusty with the whole colouring thing, but actually, since adopting watercolours into my process, going back to watercolour pencils actually felt a lot more fun. Consequently colouring took longer, but I don't begrudge it at all.

Here's some of my most recent completed pieces.

[Art] Rainbow / Star / Honey Wolf - complete :)

Star Wolf sold within a couple of hours of being listed on Etsy, before I had a chance to advertise her anywhere else. And Rainbow Wolf sold within a couple of hours of being listed on Facebook.

In other news, the She Walks In Shadows anthology by Innsmouth Free Press - a Kickstarted Lovecraftian woman-only (in terms of writers/artists/editors etc.) anthology that I have a piece of artwork in, has been nominated for a 2016 World Fantasy Award. Which is pretty nifty.

All artwork is traditional art on illustration board, using ink, watercolour pencils, pencils and some metallic/iridescent/pearlescent paint for accents. :)

[Art] THINGS (all the things)

There's like a whole bunch I haven't posted here, and managed to put everywhere else (after Facebook/Instagram/DeviantArt/Etsy/Tumblr...sometimes I get lax about Dreamwidth. Social media is exhausting).

All of these are watercolour pencil / pencil / ink on illustration board. With some metallic and/or iridescent acrylic as highlights. Some are available for sale.

Under a cut you will also find a bilby with some Celtic knotwork, a Fiji Iguana and Dandelions, a Midnight Owl, a Dragon and a Hamerkop. Don't know what a Hamerkop is? I didn't either, until quite recently... If you already knew, that's awesome )

[Art] BW of Unicorn Moon-Sickle: Courtship, and Fiji Iguana and Dandelions.

Here are some larger pieces that are yet to be coloured. One is a commission (I'm not officially taking on commissions at all, esp. not re: domesticated animals/pets/figurative stuff, but she is a long-time client and very patient with me, and she always gives me the most interesting subjects that ping me hard, in this case, a Fiji Iguana - and dandelions, heh. The dandelions are sentimental, she is a zookeeper/zoologist, and the Fiji Iguana she cared for used to love them). The other is a return to an old subject that I first/last drew in 2008. The Unicorn Moon-Sickle Bird of Paradise. I'd always loved the colour scheme and wanted to return to the faux birds of paradise again. So...I just did.

All done with 0.1 and 0.5 fineliner on illustration board.

You can also see a time-lapse video of some of the process here.

[Art] Thought I'd put these up and actually hadn't, weird.

So I have been arting a bit more than usual this year (still less than I used to, but I've been really enjoying it, which I think is the main thing).

Here's some from a little while back. The Red Dragon was a birthday gift, the bilby was because I really don't think the Australian bilby gets nearly enough love - strange rabbit-like marsupial that it is. And the eagle owl because I just really like owls? I find them easy subjects, and they always look so fierce. :D (When they don't look derpy).

As always, all in fineliner on illustration board, with watercolour / watercolour pencil / coloured pencil / and some metallic paint highlights.

[Art] The Wisdom of the Poppy.

I was so sure I'd put this up?
Like, whoops.
Anyway, I finished this a while back.
Watercolour + gold acrylic and some iridescence on the birbs.
Common Ravens instead of Australian Ravens for once.
Will eventually be listed for sale on Etsy if I ever get around to it.

And another birb. This one an Australian Raven.
And Corymbia ficifolia.
A coloured part of the Inktober challenge.
Again, will be listed on Etsy eventually if I ever get around to it, lol.
I used to be so diligent about that kind of thing.

[Art] the Wisdom of the Poppy B/W

Phew, Photobucket seems to be uploading things again.

Anyway! Not yet coloured, ink on illustration board (0.1 and 0.5 size only), this was a good way to spend a day where I couldn't find the will to write, but could apparently find the will to illustrate this instead o.o

[Art] Coloured Inktober offerings. Part two.

This is also the first time I've listed anything at all on Etsy in such a bloody long time. And it's so weird. Like, I used to do it so often and now it's been so long.

Also it got to 42C (107F) and was raining. Quite a lot. Didn't cool down at all. *shakes fist at Perth quietly*

[Art] Coloured Inktober offerings. Part one.

I've been transitioning from watercolour pencils (which are great), to watercolours (also great) and I've been really enjoying it.

Though, watercolours are scary expensive if you're trying to get 'not' student colours. Yikes. Especially in Australia.
