Meanings - The Downward Spiral

Downward spirals, escape, dark night of the soul, crisis, recovery, dowsing, engineering, sibling relationships, underworlds, mysteries, loss of faith, loyalty, survival, confronting darkness, fear, courage, inner darkness, earth, soil and land.

General Description:

The nocturnal bilby is a small, rabbit-like animal that belongs to the family of bandicoots. It is a soft-grey silky-furred creature with long ears, robust legs for digging, pointed snout and whiskers and a long black tail with a white tuft at the end. This is one of the most widely loved of small marsupials in Australia today. The bilby lives in eucalyptus/acacia woodlands, mulga scrub and desert grasslands, is also found in numerous concentrations in the wheatbelt. Bilbies live in downward spiraling burrows during the day that can reach three metres in length. Often if you try to dig a bilby out of its burrow, it'll dig its way out of the other end.

The bilby lives almost exclusively on termites, ants, seeds, bulbs, fungi and fruit. Often approximately 50% (20 - 90%) of their faeces are sand, so they also eat a lot of dirt! They risk predation from eagles, foxes and cats and extinction through habitat destruction caused by humans, pastoralism and rabbits, they also die easily through trap and poison bait distribution.

Meanings - Self-Mastery

Being underestimated, being masterful at self-work, self-mastery and shadow work, stability, the foundation of your situation, understanding multiple levels of any situation, structure, burrowing deeper, being special and unique, people will work hard to support you, a connection to the night and night magics, shadow magic, creating your world around you, borrowing from the wisdom of past generations, being grounded, inner trust, being solitary by nature, keeping to yourself, doing poorly in urban environments, feeling replaced by others, power and might.

General Description

The northern hairy-nosed wombat (yaminon) is Critically Endangered, and one of the rarest large animals in the world. They are now only found in Epping Forest National Park, with approximately 110 individuals remaining, with approximately 35 breeding females. They are found in semi-arid open woodlands and grasslands. They are up to a metre long, and weight up to 40 kilograms. Females are larger than males. They are very stocky and robust, with very powerful forearms and claws for digging. They have large heads, and are considered one of the world’s largest burrowing animals. They have continuously growing upper molars. They are marsupials. Young will stay in the pouch for 6-9 months. They have rear-facing pouches, to prevent dirt from entering as a result of their constant burrowing. They utilise their nose a great deal as a sense organ, and have poor eyesight. They smell their food in the dark. They have good hearing. They are nocturnal, but will sometimes sunbathe in the early morning. They are capable of running up to 40 kilometres per hour when threatened. They have one of the lowest water requirements, and among the lowest energy requirements of any mammal.

They are solitary, and often difficult to observe in the wild. Convergent evolution has rendered the wombat superficially similar in both appearance and habit, to the marmot. They takes coarse grass and roots. Their native grasses are often out-competed by African buffel grass, which the northern hairy-nosed wombat cannot eat. They are also in direct competition with cattle for food. They have been known to share burrows in deep sand. Their tunnel systems are intricate and large, and will use tree roots to ‘roof’ larger tunnels. The burrows have multiple entrances and will use the burrows of previous generations. They have a home range of around 15 acres, but tunnel networks can extend for up to 300 acres. They are monogamous. They do not fare well in captivity. In the past they have been hunted for their desirable fur. It has been difficult to preserve northern hairy-nosed wombat populations; it has been expensive, problematic for cattle farmers (who often have to move their cattle), and complicated by drought and other factors such as feral animal predation.

Tasmanian Devil as Totem

Meaning - Brutal Honesty

Inability to forgive, illness, anger as therapy, loudness, catharsis, communicable disease, telling others what you think of them, standing up for yourself, tactlessness, brutal honesty, the scar-bearer, fighting disease, primal scream therapy, the wisdom of aggression.

General Description:

The Tasmanian devil is a carnivorous marsupial the size of a small dog, it is the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world. When taking into account their body size in proportion to bite strength, it has the strongest bite of any living mammal. It is stout and muscular, with large jaws capable of crunching through bone. They are scavengers and hunters, and usually solitary.

Tasmanian devils can let out ear-curdling screams, shrieks and frightening growls. When excited devils let out an odour so strong that it rivals that of the skunk. They squabble with each other frequently. Young Tasmanian devils are extremely playful and boisterous. Currently, devil facial tumour disease has reduced the Tasmanian devil populations and threatens their chance of survival. The facial tumours are contracted through contact with one another, which is fairly easy considering how easily and willingly devils squabble with one another. Internationally the Tasmanian devil is best known for inspiring the 'Tazzie devil' of Looney Tunes cartoons.
