They don't seem to understand that PTSD (and many other disorders) is the thing that does the having, as in, has got one in its clutches and will not let go.
That is a very apt way of putting it. It's not exactly something one shrugs on and shrugs off like a very heavy jacket. It goes right down the marrow, and requires phenomenal effort to survive (and - if lucky - recover from). And as you say, without extraordinary effort, it would wreak havoc even more than it already does.
